Germany starts here, and it is close

North Rhine-Westphalia borders Limburg and Gelderland, and you notice that in the drive times. Aachen I do in two and a half hours, Krefeld and Duisburg the same, Cologne and Düsseldorf in about three. That is like a date in South Limburg or Twente, so it works fine for a long evening or a night.

For you it means something else as well. The threshold is lower than you think. This is no far foreign expedition, just the other side of the border, with the same motorway leading there.

Fifteen cities in one state

Nowhere in Germany do so many big cities sit this close together. Cologne and Düsseldorf half an hour apart, and around them the Ruhr area: Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg, Bochum, Gelsenkirchen, Oberhausen. Further west Mönchengladbach, Krefeld, Aachen. Further north Münster and Bielefeld. And Bonn and Wuppertal in the middle.

That means you almost never have to travel far to be outside your own city. Someone who lives in Essen and would rather not meet in Essen is in Düsseldorf in twenty minutes. For discretion that is a luxury you do not have in a thinly populated area.

Dutch works here more often than you would expect

In this corner of Germany more people speak Dutch than the Dutch expect, certainly near the border and in the big cities. It does not have to be Dutch, though. I speak German and English just as well. You pick the language, and switching halfway is fine.

What we can do together

The offering is huge and very different from city to city. Cologne with the cathedral and the Rhine panorama. Düsseldorf with the Königsallee and the old town. Münster, which looks like a Dutch student city and where everyone cycles. Aachen with the thermal baths and its Carolingian past. And everywhere in the Ruhr area the industrial culture that has been rebuilt into parks and concert halls, like Zollverein near Essen.

If you would rather do nothing at all and just sit somewhere quiet, that is just as good a date. I have no programme that has to be worked through.

What applies in practice

Travel costs depend on the distance, and you know them beforehand, before anything is fixed. No bill follows afterwards. There are no surcharges for the evening, the night, the weekend or public holidays, and booking as a couple costs no extra.

Plan a week or two ahead if you can. For the border cities shorter notice sometimes works too, but I would rather arrive rested than only just on time.

Where we meet

Usually in a hotel. Germany has an excellent setup for that, in the smaller cities too, and no one makes anything of it if you stay one night. For most women that is more comfortable than home. Neutral ground, no neighbours you know, and a door that locks.

Your place works just as well. Then we agree beforehand how I arrive, where I park and what I say if someone asks who I am. The smaller the town, the more carefully I do that.

Who I come here for

For women who are married and have not been touched the way they would want for years. Also for women who have just divorced and wonder whether they have lost the knack. For widows, who feel grief and longing at once and do not know what to do with it. Just as much for Dutch women who live or work here and have their own circle on the other side of the border.

For couples

From this state come proportionally the most questions from couples, probably simply because the distance is small and the threshold therefore lower.

The conversation usually starts with whether it is a wise idea. My yardstick: if one of you is mainly coming along to please the other, I notice it, and then we do not do it. If there is a real conversation underneath, a lot is possible. Watching, joining in, or just staying nearby. Whichever of you stops, it is always allowed, and it changes nothing about the amount.

What you can expect from me

On time, well groomed, and without the impatience of someone who has to be somewhere afterwards. I listen without pushing a direction, and there is very little I have not heard before.

Where you draw a line it stays drawn, even the moment you want to move it yourself. You appear in none of my conversations.
