The nearest German city

Aachen sits right up against South Limburg. From Maastricht you are there in half an hour, from Amsterdam in a good two. That makes it the easiest of all the German cities on this site to plan, and the only one where a weekday evening is genuinely realistic.

The city has something unusual on top of that. For a thousand years it has been a place people travelled to. First as an imperial residence, later for the hot springs. Here they are used to people passing through.

What we can do together

The cathedral, with Charlemagne’s throne, where on a good day you stand alone. The Elisenbrunnen with that faint whiff of sulphur. The Carolus Thermen, because an afternoon in warm water is one of the simplest ways to relax before you talk further. And the Lousberg, the hill above the city with a view as far as the Netherlands.

The three-country point at Vaals is a quarter of an hour away. A walk there and then warming up somewhere afterwards is a pleasant start.

Language

Dutch, German or English. This close to the border half of Aachen speaks a word of Dutch, and I certainly do.

Who I come here for

For Dutch and Belgian women who live just across the border here. Also for women who are married and have long missed what they do not say out loud. For widows, whose body wants something while the head is still grieving. Just as much for students and staff at the technical university who have everything under control except this.

Discretion in the border region

There is one thing I pay extra attention to here. Near the border you run into Dutch people. For anyone from Limburg, Aachen is not automatically anonymous ground. I greet no one first, and if you speak to me I am whoever you say I am. We think up that story beforehand.

Otherwise as always. Park where you want, no flowers, no conspicuous arrival.

Practical

Of all the cities on this site, Aachen is the cheapest to come to, for the simple reason that it lies closest. What the travel costs are you hear in the same message where we agree the rest, so before anything is fixed, and after that the amount does not change. A Saturday costs no more than a Tuesday, a night no more than an evening, and whether you book alone or as a couple makes no difference to the price.

Because the drive is short, something at short notice works here more often than further into Germany.

How a first date goes

First we write. A few messages back and forth, in which I ask things and you ask things, and in which, without anyone naming it, you notice whether this fits. Calling is fine too. And if you would first like to sit across from me at the Elisenbrunnen once without anything having to come of it, then that is what we do.

On the day itself there is no starting signal. We sit down, we talk, and the rest only comes once you are there. That first part lasts longer for almost everyone than they had estimated at home, and that is exactly the intention. After that it goes by itself.

Once you are home again, my side stays quiet. No text asking how it was, no message six months later.

Backing out is fine

Even if you are already on the A76. Even if you cleared an afternoon specially for it. You do not have to give a reason, and I will not react with disappointment, because I am not disappointed.

Dates rarely run exactly as imagined anyway. Sometimes it turns out calmer than planned, sometimes not, and both are fine. I have no stake in a particular outcome. The only thing I steer toward is that a week later you still look back on it feeling good.

If you are still hesitating

Sending a message commits you to nothing. Some of the women who email me do so months before a date comes into view, just to know how it works and what it costs. From some of them I never hear anything again, and that is completely fine. Others get in touch again in the spring.

I sell nothing. I do not push, I send no reminder and my calendar does not need filling. If it does not feel right, that is the answer and we leave it there.
