Gigolo in North Holland

Home turf

North Holland is my province. I live in Amsterdam, I know the city down to its side streets, and the rest of North Holland feels like cycling distance. Alkmaar, Haarlem, Hoorn, Zaandam, Purmerend. Those aren’t far-off destinations for me, they’re places I’m at regularly. Even Den Helder and Texel belong to it, though for those I ask for a bit more planning time.

In practice that means two things. The travel time is short, so a date on a weekday evening is easier to fit in here than anywhere else in the country. And the travel costs stay modest, or fall away entirely if you’re in or right around Amsterdam.

City, village and everything in between

This province is surprisingly layered. Within half an hour you go from a city where nobody pays anyone any mind, to a village where the baker knows who had visitors yesterday. That calls for a different approach, and I’m aware of it.

In Amsterdam or Haarlem I just walk into a hotel and nobody notices a thing. In a village in West Friesland or the Zaan region I think harder about where I park the car, I don’t show up with a bunch of flowers, and I don’t ring three times if you don’t answer right away. Small things, but exactly those things decide whether you feel relaxed.

What you can do here

North Holland has a backdrop for almost any mood. An evening by the canals in Amsterdam or Alkmaar. A beach walk at Bergen or Castricum with the wind for company and then warming up somewhere after. The quiet of the North Holland Dune Reserve. The harbour of Hoorn in low sunlight. A boat, a wood, or just a hotel room where the curtains stay shut, that’s a fine plan too.

Some women want to do something together first, to walk off the tension. Others would rather skip that. Both are fine. We agree beforehand what it becomes, and you can change your mind along the way.

• Van der Valk Purmerend: similar, handy for Waterland and the Zaan region.
• Van der Valk Akersloot: nicely central for Alkmaar, Castricum and Beverwijk.
• Duinlodge near Schoorl: right by the Schoorl dunes, for when you want to combine a night with a walk.

Who I come here for

The women who write to me from North Holland resemble each other less than you’d think. Married and, for years, not touched the way they’d want. Just divorced and afraid they’ve lost the knack.
