Glossary
The man at the center of the scenario, the one most judged and least thought about.
A cuckold (Dutch: hoorndrager, left untranslated in the scene) is the man whose partner has sex with someone else with his knowledge and consent, and who gets aroused by it himself. In the classic meaning he was in fact the deceived husband. The word names the person, not the practice.
| Dutch term | hoorndrager only covers the classic meaning of a deceived husband; in the scene cuckold is used untranslated. |
| The practice around it | cuckolding, where the dynamic itself and the figures are |
| The other roles | bull, the third man, and cuckoldress, his partner |
| Female counterpart | cuckquean, the woman in the same position |
| In the research | troilism, the scientific term for this preference |
| Not to be confused with | a deceived husband; a cuckold knows about it, wants it, and can stop it |
From the outside the cuckold looks like the one who does nothing. In practice he is the one who does the most groundwork. The encyclopedia puts it briefly: in fetish use the cuckold is complicit in his partner’s so-called infidelity. Complicit here means he helps think it up, approves it, and keeps an eye on whether it feels right.
A common course of events: he is the first to bring the subject up, often after years of fantasizing, and is startled by his own words. Then comes the phase where he mostly asks questions. What if I don’t enjoy it after all. What if she enjoys it more than I do. Only once those questions have answers does anything get planned.
His hardest task is not the evening itself, but speaking up when something tips over. A cuckold who pushes through because it was his own idea takes on exactly the regret he wanted to avoid. Consent given only at the start is no longer consent halfway through.
The classic explanation is masochism. The encyclopedia sums it up this way: psychology views cuckold fetishism as a variant of masochism, in which the cuckold takes pleasure in being humiliated. That is one reading, and for some men it fits exactly.
The research shows a broader picture. In Archives of Sexual Behavior, Lehmiller, Ley and Savage studied 580 predominantly gay men and found that the content of their fantasies was tied to personality traits like compliance, sensation-seeking and attitudes toward sex outside a relationship. What stood out just as much was what was missing: BDSM themes and interracial themes came up clearly less often in this group than in earlier research among heterosexual men. So humiliation is not the engine under every cuckold, but one of the engines.
For most men the gain lies in dissolving a contradiction. Something that was always threatening, jealousy, turns out to be able to feel exciting within agreed limits. That is a relief that reaches further than sex.
The same researchers found that men who put their fantasies into practice looked back on it largely positively, but that the odds of a good outcome depended on personality and attachment style. The role does not put an end to insecurity. It makes insecurity visible. Anyone starting it to repair something is choosing the wrong tool.
There is no standard version, but there are recognizable ways to fill it. The most common is the quiet one: he is there, watches, and says little.
What sets the careful version apart from the sloppy one is never the way it is filled in, but whether all three talked it through beforehand.
“A cuckold is a deceived man.” Not in this meaning. The word has two lives: in the old meaning it happened to you, in today’s fetish use you choose it together. That difference sits in Dutch too. According to Wiktionary, hoorndrager simply means a deceived husband, first recorded in 1599. So it covers today’s cuckold only halfway.
“He has to feel humiliated, otherwise it doesn’t count.” Not true. Humiliation is one way to fill the role, not a definition of it. Anyone who does not want the humiliating variant does not have to play it.
“His consent goes without saying, it was his idea after all.” No, and legally that is no small matter either. Under the Dutch Sexual Offenses Act, in force since 1 July 2024, sex must always be voluntary and equal, even when someone said yes to something earlier.
I am Victor, a gigolo, and I am asked by couples for exactly this scenario. The man is almost always the one who brought the idea forward, and during the introductory talk the one who says the least.
The question that comes back most often is not about sex. It is about whether this says something about what kind of man he is. My answer is that a man who says out loud what he wants, and who wishes his partner something good, does not make himself smaller but more visible.
And what keeps striking me: it goes well with the couples where he dared to say beforehand what he did not want. It is not the list of wishes that makes the difference, but the list of exceptions.
On this site, cuckolding explains the dynamic itself, with the figures, and the taboo of cuckolding unmasked describes where the shame around the role comes from.
Beyond this site, the study by Lehmiller, Ley and Savage is the best entry point: it asked men about their fantasy and about how it went when they actually did it.

A cuckold is the man whose partner has sex with someone else with his knowledge and consent, and who gets aroused by it himself. The word names the person, not the practice.
No. A hoorndrager is a deceived husband: it happens to him. A cuckold knows about it, wants it and can stop it. The same word family, the opposite starting position.
No, humiliation is one way to fill the role and not a condition. Research by Lehmiller, Ley and Savage links these fantasies to personality traits rather than to a need for humiliation.
That he speaks up when something tips over for him, even if he came up with the scenario himself. Consent given only at the start no longer holds halfway through.
