Cuckquean

A word four hundred years old that has only come back into use in recent years.

What is a cuckquean?

A cuckquean (Dutch: no word of its own) is the female counterpart of the cuckold: the woman whose partner has sex with someone else with her knowledge. Wiktionary distinguishes two meanings, namely a woman with an unfaithful partner, and a woman who is in fact aroused by that unfaithfulness. In the scene the second one is meant.

Dutch termNone. According to Wiktionary, cuckquean is a blend of cuckold and quean, an old word for a woman of ill repute; there is no Dutch word for it.

Where the word comes from

It is not a fad word. The Online Etymology Dictionary records cuckquean as the female counterpart of cuckold, noted in the 1560s. The encyclopedia gives the oldest occurrence: John Heywood wrote in 1562, “Ye make hir a cookqueane, and conſume hir good.” So the word existed for centuries before anyone used it to name a preference.

Why women recognize themselves in it

For most women the appeal turns on two things at once: feeling jealousy and noticing that the jealousy is arousing instead of threatening. The gaze comes with it, because watching someone you know gives you an image you would never conjure yourself.

A cuckquean who mostly agrees to please her partner is left with discomfort. The role only works if the desire is truly hers as well.

Two meanings, one word

Mind the doubleness the dictionary already flags. In the old meaning the cuckquean is the victim of an unfaithful man. In the current one she is the woman who wants the situation herself. Anyone who comes across the word without context can read it two ways. The encyclopedia adds something that is often forgotten: the dynamic is usually depicted as heterosexual, but can involve any gender and any orientation.
