Cuckqueaning

The variant where the woman has the watching role, and one far less has been written about.

What is cuckqueaning?

Cuckqueaning (Dutch: no native word) is the dynamic where a woman is aroused by the idea of her male partner having sex with another woman, with her knowledge and consent. She is called the cuckquean, her partner the hothusband, and the third woman the cuckcake. The practice is also known as hothusbanding.

Dutch termNone. Cuckqueaning is used untranslated; no Dutch word for it exists.

Cuckqueaning or cuckqueening

You come across both spellings, and that is not sloppiness. Cuckqueaning follows the noun cuckquean, which is built from cuckold and the old word quean. Cuckqueening is the spelling many people type because they hear it as “queen”. The article on this site about cuckqueening uses that second form; this glossary keeps the first, because it follows where the word comes from. They mean the same thing.

How cuckqueaning looks in practice

The most common version is the one where nothing happens. A couple talks about it, fantasizes about it, and leaves it there. That is a full form in its own right, and for many women the only one they want.

If it does happen, it goes roughly like this. The couple talks about it for months, chooses the third woman together, and agrees on what is and is not allowed. The cuckquean sets her own place: in the room, in the room next door, or out of the house with an account afterward. The encyclopedia singles out one version here: for some fetishists her humiliation is the main ingredient. For others it plays no part at all, and it is about watching, about jealousy that flips, or about what happens between the two of them afterward.

What marks the careful version is dull and familiar: everything is settled before there is a date, anyone may stop without explanation, and time is set aside for the couple together once the third woman has left.

Where the arousal comes from

The mechanism is a reversal. Jealousy, which in daily life feels threatening, takes on a different charge within agreed limits and becomes tension. On top of that comes the watching side: seeing your partner through someone else’s eyes shows a side you cannot bring out yourself.

What is interesting is that women are more often drawn to the other side of the same coin. Sex researcher Justin Lehmiller, affiliated with the Kinsey Institute, asked 4,175 Americans about their fantasies. Of the heterosexual women, 26 percent had fantasized about watching their partner with someone else, against 40 percent about being watched by their partner. Among non-heterosexual women both were higher, at 42 and 58 percent. His conclusion is that women fantasize more often about the watched role than about the watching role, and that is exactly why cuckqueaning is rarer than cuckolding.

What cuckqueaning gives a couple

The payoff rarely sits in the one evening. It sits in what comes before it: a conversation in which two people get more precise about what they want than they have been in years.

  • For the cuckquean the gain is usually that a fantasy she never dared name is allowed to exist, without anything breaking.
  • For her partner it is the confirmation that her desire is real, and not something he talked her into.
  • For them together it gives them a language for jealousy, where before it only existed as a fight.

Cuckqueaning takes no tension away. A couple that brings tension into the evening meets that tension again, stronger, afterward. And there is little hard evidence for what it does. The only large study of people who actually acted out this kind of fantasy, by Lehmiller, Ley, and Savage, was about 580 mostly gay men. On women in the watching role, that research simply does not exist yet.

Misconceptions about cuckqueaning

“It’s just cuckolding with the roles reversed.” At its core that is true, but in practice not entirely. The vocabulary is different, the visibility is much smaller, and the third person here is a woman who needs a reason of her own to take part.

“It’s always about humiliation.” No. Humiliation is the core for some people and absent for others. Anyone who does not want the humiliating version does not have to play it.

“This is something for heterosexual couples.” That is how it is usually pictured, but the encyclopedia itself notes that the dynamic can involve any gender and any orientation.

What I see of it myself

I am Victor, a gigolo, and in this scenario I am precisely not the third person: the third here is a woman. What I do come across is the conversation beforehand. Women message me with a question they ask nowhere else, usually along the lines of whether it is strange that this turns them on.

The shame is often not about the fantasy itself, but about the fear that they are erasing themselves with it. My experience is that it works exactly the other way around: the women for whom this turns out well are the ones who first worked out what they want to get from it, and only then who the third woman becomes.
