What is a stag?

A stag is the man who lets his partner go with other people and enjoys it, without any humiliation involved. The dictionary describes him as a man who allows his wife to have sex with other men. The woman in that same arrangement is called a vixen or hotwife.

Where the word stag comes from

From the same animal as the horns of the betrayed man. The encyclopedia explains that a cuckold in the Western tradition “wears the horns”, and that the expression points to the mating behavior of deer: the male loses his mate the moment another male beats him. That same deer now gives its name to the man who loses nothing but made the arrangement himself. One animal, two sides of the same image.

The word itself is old. Etymonline traces stagge back to the late twelfth century and further to the Old English stagga, where the Germanic root probably just meant “male animal in its prime”. The “men only” sense is American slang from 1837, and the stag party of 1853 grows out of it. Funny enough, that is the exact opposite evening. At a stag party there are no women; with a stag there is no one there but her.

In Dutch the word collides even harder. Since 1600 a stag here is the cable or steel wire that holds a mast upright, and in Limburg stag is also an adjective meaning stiff. The newspaper archive of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, the Dutch national library, returns 40,302 hits, and a sample of them is about something else entirely: the acronym STAG of a Dutch organization from the 1970s, and the Triumph Stag.

What the stag role asks

Staying present while nothing is asked of you. That is harder than it sounds, because a stag has no job on the night itself. He is not the host, not the third person, and usually not even in the room.

• For the stag, the payoff is that a fantasy he has carried for years gets to exist with nothing done behind anyone’s back.
• For his partner, the payoff depends entirely on whether she chose it herself. What the research on these arrangements shows is over at hotwifing.

Where it goes wrong is always the same point. His enthusiasm is not her consent. A stag who picks the third person, plans the night, and makes up the rules has made an arrangement on someone else’s behalf. That is no longer a stag-and-vixen dynamic, it is an assignment with a nice name.
