Hotwife

The only role in this word field named after the woman, and at the same time the role most often thought up by someone else.

What is a hotwife?

A hotwife is a married or cohabiting woman whose partner encourages her to sleep with other men, while he usually stays monogamous himself. Humiliation isn’t part of it: he’s proud, not belittled. The word names an arrangement, not a personality type.

English termIdentical. Hotwife is formed from hot and wife and is used unchanged in Dutch
Also known asvixen, cuckoldress in the variant with humiliation
Her partner is calleda stag, or a cuckold once humiliation does come into play
The third persona bull
Categoryconsensual non-monogamy; the practice around it is called hotwifing
Not to be confused withswinging, where both partners sleep with others
Practical requirementher own desire as the starting point, plus clarity about testing and condoms

How the hotwife role looks in practice

A hotwife makes a plan, goes alone, and comes back. In most cases that’s the whole picture. Her partner isn’t there, knows about it, and hears the story afterward, or precisely doesn’t, if that’s what they agreed.

The usual course: it’s talked about for months before anything happens. She chooses the third person herself, because that’s where it goes wrong otherwise. They agree what is and isn’t allowed, who gets a message and when, and what doesn’t happen that evening. Then there’s an evening, and the day after a conversation that lasts longer than the evening itself.

What the role asks of her isn’t in the sex. It’s in guarding her own desire. If she goes through with the evening because it’s his fantasy, she’s judging her boundaries on someone else’s behalf, and at some point that goes wrong. Clinical psychologist David Ley, who has studied these couples since 2008, writes that he almost always saw hotwifing and cuckolding brought up by the man; women who sought it out on their own were a rare exception. That picture is shifting, but it stays the standard situation a hotwife arrangement grows out of.

Where the word hotwife comes from

From English, and from the swinging world. Wiktionary forms the word from hot plus wife and describes a hotwife as a married woman who has sex with people other than her husband, with his approval.

That the role got its own word has everything to do with what isn’t attached to it. In Psychology Today Ley describes the distinction in one sentence: cuckolding often has an element of male submission or humiliation in it, while in hotwifing the men are equal partners and humiliation plays no role. The same event, a different center of gravity.

Ley adds one more thing that explains why hotwife couples often feel at home nowhere: he met a couple who took part in the swinging world but kept their interest in cuckolding secret, because swingers looked down on the man not also sleeping with others.

Why women want this role

The pull sits in being desired where it’s seen. Not in secret, and not as something that has to be explained away afterward, but with her partner on the other side of the arrangement. For many women that’s the first time their own desire is the starting point of an evening instead of the afterthought.

  • For the hotwife herself the gain is that she has nothing to hide: no double agenda, and attention she doesn’t have to pay for with shame.
  • For her partner the gain lies in seeing instead of guessing. What existed for years only in his head gets a place in reality.
  • For the couple together the payoff rarely comes from that one evening. It sits in what may come onto the table afterward, including about things that have nothing to do with this.

Whether that holds up statistically has been partly researched. Rubel and Bogaert reviewed the research on consensual non-monogamy in The Journal of Sex Research and conclude that consensual non-monogamists broadly have the same psychological well-being and relationship quality as monogamous people. Two caveats. That review is about swinging, open relationships and polyamory, not about hotwifing separately. And an equal average says the form does no harm in itself, not that every couple comes out of it well.

Misconceptions about the hotwife

“A hotwife is just a swinger.” No, and that difference is the whole point. In swinging both partners sleep with others; in hotwifing usually only she does. Ley describes swingers even looking down on hotwife couples for it.

“Hotwife and cuckoldress are two words for the same thing.” Almost, but not quite. Cuckoldress belongs to the dynamic where her partner draws arousal from submission or humiliation. With a hotwife that part is missing, and her partner is usually called a stag instead of a cuckold.

“If he wants it, she wants it too.” That’s exactly the assumption where it goes wrong. In the podcast interview on this site it’s said out loud: if a man enjoys it, that doesn’t mean the woman is up for it. Consent given out of politeness stops being consent halfway through the evening.

What I see of it myself

I’m Victor, a gigolo, and couples ask me to be the third person in exactly this arrangement. In the first meeting the woman is usually the one who says the least, and that in itself says something.

The fantasy without the arrangement I come across quite a lot: men who have this wish and never dare to discuss it with their wife. No date comes of it then. That’s a shame, but it’s a lot less bad than the reverse, where a date does happen and she’s mostly just carrying it out.

With the couples where this works out well there’s always one thing the same: she chose herself. Yes or no, and also who, when and how far. Once that really rests with her, the tone of the whole conversation changes, on the points it was never about too.

What to watch for as a hotwife

  • Choose the third person yourself, even if your partner already has someone in mind. Whoever chooses may also call it off.
  • Agree what happens with the story. Does your partner want to hear everything, nothing, or only what you feel like sharing? That’s a separate agreement, and it’s often forgotten.
  • Put STI arrangements on the table before there’s a date. Research by Dukers-Muijrers and colleagues at the STI clinic in South Limburg showed that 12 percent of nearly nine thousand consultations involved swingers, and that older swingers had a chlamydia prevalence of 10 percent. So put your testing moments in the calendar instead of leaving them to chance.
  • Say out loud when you stop, and that you don’t have to give a reason for it. To the third person too.
  • Plan the time afterward, with your partner. The evening is only over once you’ve come through it together.

On this site, hotwifing explains the practice around it and cuckolding describes the broader dynamic, including the survey research on how widespread the fantasy is. Do you want to hear the role explained in plain language? Then there’s a piece about it in the podcast interview with Brabants Meisje.

Off this site, clinical psychologist David Ley has been writing about these couples since 2008 and is the author of Insatiable Wives, the only book that takes the hotwife side as its starting point. Anyone who’d rather read the research itself starts with the review article by Rubel and Bogaert on well-being in consensual non-monogamy.

Frequently asked questions

What people still ask about the hotwife.

  1. What is a hotwife?

A hotwife is a woman who, with her partner’s consent and encouragement, has sex with other men, while that partner usually stays monogamous himself. Humiliation of the partner isn’t part of it; in that setup he’s called a stag, not a cuckold. The hotwife role stands or falls on her own desire, not on his fantasy.

  2. Is a hotwife the same as a swinger?

No. In swinging both partners sleep with others; with a hotwife usually only she does. Clinical psychologist David Ley describes swingers even looking down on hotwife couples for it, because the man didn’t also play with others. The same world, a different arrangement.

  3. What does the role of a hotwife ask?

Above all that she chooses herself: who the third person is, when it happens and how far. A hotwife who goes through with the evening because it’s her partner’s fantasy is judging her boundaries on someone else’s behalf. Beyond that, STI arrangements belong to it and an agreement about what is and isn’t told afterward.

  4. Who can you turn to with questions about the hotwife role?

Victor, a gigolo with twenty-five years of experience and a background as a psychotherapist. Couples ask him to be the third person in exactly this arrangement, and he can tell you what’s discussed beforehand and where it went wrong for others. Asking costs nothing and commits you to nothing: send it through the contact form or chat for free first.
