Close, despite everything

From Amsterdam, South Holland feels further away than it is. Rotterdam is an hour by train, The Hague a little less, Leiden a short half hour. Even Dordrecht is easy enough. What makes it tricky is not the distance but the traffic, so for a weekday-evening date I would rather pick a time when the A4 behaves.

In practice that means one thing. Plan a few days to a week ahead here. Then I can choose a moment when I arrive relaxed instead of just in time.

Two cities, two moods

On the map Rotterdam and The Hague look like neighbours, but they ask for a different kind of evening. Rotterdam is direct and unbothered. You walk into a hotel and nobody looks up. The Hague is more formal, with more people who mind their own visibility, the diplomatic and political crowd, and I match my arrival to that.

Around them sits a run of smaller cities, each with its own pace. Leiden studenty and old, Delft understated and pretty, Gouda easy-going, Dordrecht maritime and underrated, Zoetermeer practical and modern. What plays out in this province

South Holland is densely populated, and that means two things at once. Anonymity is easier to find here than almost anywhere, because in a city of six hundred thousand nobody knows you. But in the neighbourhoods and the smaller towns the social watching runs tight.

I handle that carefully. Where I park, how I arrive, what I wear, what I say if someone is listening in. We settle that beforehand. No flowers at the door, no loud greeting, no car that circles the block twice.

Home or hotel

In the big cities a hotel is nearly always the easiest choice. Plenty of rooms, plenty of coming and going, nobody who notices a thing. In the smaller cities it works the same way, the options just sit further apart. Home is fine anywhere, as long as you feel at ease there, and that is the only criterion that counts.

For women who are married and have not been touched the way they want in years, with no argument and nobody to blame. For women who have just divorced and wonder whether they have lost the knack. You have not. Widows, in whom grief and longing sit side by side. Women who work hard and never get to simply be. And women who have never experienced any of this and think they missed the train. You did not.
