My own part of the country

I was born and raised in Brabant. You probably will not hear it in my accent, but you will notice it in how easily I move around here. I know how it works. People spend the first half hour talking about nothing before anything important comes up. Hospitality here is a habit rather than a courtesy. And “just being normal” counts as a compliment.

For a date that helps. In Brabant you rarely have to dress anything up. You say what you want, I say what I do, and then we see whether it fits. No fuss with forms, no agency in between, no smooth talk.

From city to village

North Brabant is big and varied. Eindhoven has turned technical, international and surprisingly hip. Tilburg is rougher and more creative than its reputation. Breda loves its food and its terraces. Den Bosch has that southern feel you catch the moment you walk out of the station. And Bergen op Zoom is small, historic, with the Zeeland wind already within reach.

Around them lie hundreds of villages. Uden, Oss, Waalwijk, Roosendaal, Helmond, Veghel, the whole Kempen. I go there too. Those places just do not get their own page, because I would rather write five good ones than the same story fifty times with a different town name swapped in.

Discretion in a province where everyone knows everyone

Brabant is sociable, and most of the time that is a blessing. Here it calls for care. In a village a strange car stands out. At a carnival club everyone knows who spends time with whom. And if you have lived here your whole life, you run into about three people you know on every trip to the supermarket.

So I keep it quiet here. I park where you want, even if that is some way off or by a shopping centre. I do not show up with flowers. I do not ring the bell three times. And if someone asks who I am, I stick to the story you came up with. Think that up beforehand and you will not have to improvise on the spot.

A lot of women pick a hotel in a neighbouring town rather than home. That is not overcautious, just sensible, and I am happy to think along about where.

What we can do

This province has room. The Loonse en Drunense Duinen, where you walk through sand as if you were in France. The Biesbosch on the western side. The Peel. The Kempen. Country estates, woods, and village cafés where you can sit for hours without anyone asking whether you want to order something else.

And in the cities there is food, drink, museums, or just walking. The Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch, the Piushaven in Tilburg in the evening.

None of it is required, though. If you would rather sit somewhere quiet from the start, that is an evening every bit as good. I have no programme and you have nothing to prove.

Who I come to Brabant for

For women who are married and have not been properly touched in years, with no argument and nobody to blame. For women who have just divorced and stayed on the same street. Widows, in whom longing and grief run into each other. For women who have never experienced any of this and wonder whether it is too late for that now. It is not.

Practical

From Amsterdam, Brabant is an hour and a half to two hours’ drive, depending on where you are. Easy enough, but I like to plan a little ahead. Then I arrive rested instead of rushed. For a whole night or an erotic overnight the distance is no obstacle at all.

Travel costs depend on the distance and you know them beforehand, before anything is fixed. I have no surcharge for the evening, the night, the weekend or public holidays, and booking as a couple costs nothing extra.
