Rope

The part the whole rope cabinet turns around, and the only one whose shape has nothing to do with the fiber.

What is rope?

Rope is a long, flexible binding made of three layers of twist: fibers into yarn, yarns into strands, strands into rope, each layer twisted the opposite way. That counter-twist is what holds the whole thing together. In bondage, rope is the part that carries the force. What it is made of stands apart from that build-up.

Why a rope does not fall apart

Through geometry, not through the material. Jakob Bohr and Kasper Olsen showed in EPL that only a limited number of turns can be added to a helix, and that this limit is “a geometrical feature, not a material property”. Hence their conclusion that “nearly identically appearing ropes can be made from very different materials”.

A strand twisted up to that limit they call a zero-twist structure: “Under strain they neither rotate one or the other way.” So a well-laid rope does not wring on its own under weight. From the same geometry follows why a rope has to be under tension while it is being laid, something already visible in Egyptian tomb paintings.

Where the Dutch word touw comes from

From Middle Dutch, and it is old. The Etymologisch Woordenboek van het Nederlands gives touwe “cordage, line” with its oldest attestation in an account entry from 1286, and traces it back to Proto-Germanic *tauwa-. That same dictionary also explains two Dutch expressions that have nothing to do with bondage: in touw zijn (to be busy) comes from the harness a horse is hitched in, and iets op touw zetten (to set something up) from stretching the warp on a loom.

The oldest Dutch description you could call a definition is in the Seeman by Wigardus à Winschoten from 1681: rope is “al het geen van kennip, of hennip, gedraaid, of geslaagen werd, om tot koorden, lijnen, seelen, kaabels, ens. gebruikt te werden”. Hemp, twisted or laid. More than three centuries later, rope lovers still buy exactly that.

Why people choose rope

Because it gives and yet stays where you put it. A steel cuff does one thing; a strand of rope can hold a wrist, lift a chest, or just run across your back, and the pressure spreads over the width of the wrap instead of over an edge. That a wrap holds without a knot comes from the roughness of the fiber, and that is laid out under friction.

For you the gain is that you see it coming: rope goes slowly, layer by layer, and you feel every wrap land before anything is fixed. The material sorts nothing out for you. Where a wrap lies decides the harm, and that is set out under shibari and suspension with figures attached.

  1. What exactly is rope?

    Rope is a binding made of three layers of twist: fibers are spun into yarn, yarns are twisted into strands, and strands are laid into rope, each layer opposite to the last. That counter-twist is what holds a rope together. According to Bohr and Olsen in EPL, that is geometry and not a property of the fiber, which is why ropes of very different materials look so much alike.

  2. Which rope do you use for bondage?

    For Japanese rope work, loosely laid three-strand rope of around 6 millimeters in lengths of seven to eight meters is the standard, usually in jute or hemp. Six millimeters is thick enough to spread the pressure over some skin and thin enough to hold neat knots. Anyone who wants the look without the upkeep ends up at Hempex, and gives up some grip.
