The erotic blueprint (Dutch: erotische blauwdruk) is a division into five erotic types that describes how someone most likes to get aroused. It is a self-help model from the American somatic sex therapist Jaiya, not a scientific theory. The five types are energetic, sensual, sexual, kinky and shapeshifter.
| Dutch term | erotische blauwdruk, also erotische blauwdrukken for the five types together |
| Coined by | the American somatic sex therapist Jaiya; it is a popular model, not peer-reviewed research |
| Category | a model of arousal, in the family of the sexual response cycle |
| The five types | energetic, sensual, sexual, kinky, and the shapeshifter that has a bit of each type |
| Related to | libido and desire discrepancy, because it explains why two people are turned on differently |
| Main caveat | it is not a diagnosis and not a fixed label for life |
An erotic blueprint is a map of your arousal. The wellness outlet mindbodygreen describes it as “an arousal map to your primary sexual style”: which kinds of pleasure you enjoy, what turns you on and off, and what gets you off. Jaiya herself calls the blueprints “a language” for reading your own eroticism and someone else’s.
The five types in brief:
A normal situation: she is energetic, he is sexual. He heads straight for the core, she needs build-up and space, and both of them think the other does not want it enough. The model gives that a word, and that word takes the blame out of it.
The erotic blueprint comes from one person, not from a laboratory. Somatic sex therapist Jaiya came up with the model based on two decades of work with clients around arousal and pleasure. She brought it to a wide audience with an online quiz and with her book Your Blueprint for Pleasure (2023), in which she works out the five types. The comparison she makes herself is with the five love languages: as much a handy framework as a proven typology.
That is also the honest line under this page. There is no independent scientific research that confirms the five types. It is a self-help model, not a recognized diagnosis, and you usually score on two or three types at once rather than on exactly one.
The appeal is in recognition. Someone who spent years thinking “something is wrong with me” suddenly reads that their way of getting turned on is simply a type, not a flaw. That is a relief even before anything changes.
What it does not do: it does not solve a dead bedroom or a deeper conflict. A type is a description, not a recipe. And the moment you push yourself or your partner into a box (“you are just not kinky”), it works against you instead of for you.
“It is scientifically proven.” No. Jaiya speaks of years of clinical work, but that is something other than peer-reviewed research. There is no independent study that tests the five types. Use it as language, not as proof.
“You are one type.” Usually not. Most people score on two or three blueprints, and your center of gravity can shift with time and with the partner. The shapeshifter is the whole idea of that: turned on by a bit of everything.
“It is the same as your libido.” No. Libido is about how much desire you have, the blueprint about what turns you on. Two people with equal desire can have completely different blueprints, and that is exactly where the misunderstanding between couples arises.
I am Victor, a gigolo, over twenty-five years into BDSM and with a background as a psychotherapist. I rarely say the word blueprint out loud, but the idea behind it matches what I see: people get turned on in very different ways.
What strikes me most often is how many women take themselves for “difficult” or “cold” while they simply do not get turned on sexually but energetically or sensually. Take the haste out and build it up, and something changes that no technique can manage.
And this: the type is a beginning, not a final stop. I would rather watch what happens in the moment than which box someone picked for themselves beforehand. The map is handy, but the journey itself reads differently. That build-up without haste is exactly what an intimate togetherness makes possible.
On this site, sexual response cycle sits closest to it: it describes the phases of arousal whose flavor a blueprint colors. Desire discrepancy covers what you do when two people are not in sync, and erotic intelligence covers how you keep desire alive.
Beyond this site, Jaiya’s own book Your Blueprint for Pleasure is the source itself, in which she works out the five types.
Frequently asked questions
An erotic blueprint is a division into five types that describes how someone most likes to get aroused: energetic, sensual, sexual, kinky or shapeshifter. It is a self-help model from sex therapist Jaiya, not a scientific diagnosis. Most people recognize themselves in two or three types at once.
Your erotic blueprint gives you language for what turns you on, so that difference in bed does not have to turn into a fight or blame. Saying “I am sensual and you are sexual” comes easier than “you are doing it wrong.” Keep in mind that the erotic blueprint is a description, not a recipe, and does not solve a deeper problem.
You find your erotic blueprint by working out what turns you on the most: space and tension (energetic), mood and the senses (sensual), direct sex (sexual) or the taboo (kinky). Jaiya put out an online quiz for that, but honestly looking back at what really arouses you works just as well. Do not pin yourself down on one outcome.
