Good girl kink: why those two words land so hard

Good girl kink: why those two words hit you so hard

A good girl kink is arousal, or deep relaxation, when your partner calls you “good girl.” It is a form of praise kink: praise from someone whose judgment matters to you, right after you did something for him. It lands because it says two things at once. You did well, and he noticed.

What does good girl mean in bed?

In bed, good girl means: I see what you just did for me, and it was exactly right. It is a verdict and a reward in one. Outside the bedroom it can sound condescending fast. Inside an agreed game between two adults who choose this together, it is one of the shortest ways to make someone feel seen.

Sounds strange, that two words can make your knees go weak? I get it. The words themselves don’t do much. What gives them their charge is what comes before.

Picture it: you’re lying still, hands above your head, and everything in you wants to move. You don’t. Then you feel my breath at your ear and I say it, soft and low. Good girl. That’s the moment the tension drops out of your shoulders.

You can use good girl completely apart from any fixed roles. In a DDlg relationship it often does belong, as the standard way the daddy role speaks. Where that word daddy comes from, I cover in my piece on daddy kink.

Good girl meaning in bed for two adult partners

Why do you like being called a good girl?

You like it because it takes the doubt away. All week you wonder whether it’s good enough, at work and in how you come across. In that one moment you don’t have to judge it yourself. Someone else does, out loud, and his verdict is kind.

Clinical psychologist Jacqueline Sherman put it this way to Bustle: “Partner approval can make someone feel more loveable, attractive, submissive, and/or appreciated.” I see that in practice. Women who run everything the rest of the week often love not being the yardstick for once.

There’s something else going on. Good girl is about what you do, not how you look. A compliment about your body is easy to wave away. Praise for something you just did yourself is much harder to brush off.

And don’t be embarrassed about it. According to Bustle, the hashtag #praisek1nk already had more than 568 million views back in 2022. Under one of those videos someone wrote: “I didn’t even know I had a praise kink until today.” So you’re in good company.

What does he mean when he calls you a good girl?

When he calls you a good girl, he usually means three things at once: I’m paying attention to you, you’re doing well, and I’m in charge here. That last part is what makes it exciting. He takes the role of the one who judges, and you give him that right for the length of the game.

With a good daddy dom it’s never empty praise. He says it when there’s something to praise, and he doesn’t when there isn’t. That’s what keeps it worth something. A man who repeats it after every sentence turns it into wallpaper. What else sets a good daddy dom apart is in daddy dom traits.

Tone is everything. The same two words can sound warm or mocking. In my experience you hear which one it is within a second, and your body reacts before your head does.

Does good girl really lower your stress?

No, there is no research showing that “good girl” lowers your cortisol. The claim goes around on TikTok, but I haven’t found a single study that measures the stress hormone after those two words. What has been studied tells a more interesting story.

StudyWhat they measuredWhat they found
Ditzen et al. 2007, 67 women with a steady partnercortisol under stress, after 10 minutes of partner contacta massage from the partner lowered cortisol and heart rate; supportive words alone did not
Berretz et al. 2022, 76 people in relationshipscortisol after a short hug before stressless cortisol in women, no effect in men
Sagarin et al. 2009, 58 people who practice BDSMcortisol before, during and after a sceneduring the scene cortisol rose in whoever was tied up and following orders; after a scene that went well it dropped and they felt closer to each other

That first study is honestly the one I find most interesting. Ditzen and colleagues write it plainly: “Verbal social support alone was not associated with reduced stress responsiveness.” Words alone didn’t do it. Touch did.

So what you feel after an evening where someone called you good girl probably doesn’t come from that sentence. It comes from the whole thing. His hands on your skin, a game that ended well and the aftercare afterward. The words are just the moment you notice it. That doesn’t make it any less real.

Is a good girl kink always submissive?

No, a good girl kink is not always submissive. Sherman tells Bustle that someone with a praise kink can be submissive or dominant. Some women simply want to hear that they’re good, without a single order involved.

Still, in practice good girl usually lives inside a power game. Sexologist Gloria Brame says in the same piece that in a power dynamic it can be about obedience or a specific act, like holding a position. That’s where the praise gets a yardstick.

None of this says anything bad about you. In 2013 Wismeijer and Van Assen compared more than 900 Dutch people who practice BDSM with a control group. The BDSM group was less neurotic and less sensitive to rejection. On average they also felt better.

What if you don’t like being called good girl?

If you don’t like good girl, say so, and he uses something else. Nothing is wrong with you. For some women it hits right on that old feeling that they always had to be sweet and compliant. Then it doesn’t feel like praise. It feels like a leash.

What you can do:

  1. Name it beforehand, not in the middle of the game. “Use my name instead” is enough.
  2. Find a word together that does land: “that’s it,” “yes, like that,” your own name, or just his voice dropping lower.
  3. Agree on a safeword, so you can stop it during the scene too if it suddenly lands wrong.
  4. Talk about it afterward. What did get to you? That’s often where the real kink is.

A man who can’t stop after you’ve told him isn’t listening. That isn’t dominance. Dominance starts with hearing exactly what she does and doesn’t want.

How I use good girl

Sparingly (a friend calls that stingy, I call it timing). I ask beforehand whether you like it, and which words you don’t. Everything can be discussed, nothing has to happen! During, I only say it when it’s earned, usually after a silence where you’re not quite sure it was right. That waiting does half the work.

And afterward I stay with you. Praise that falls in the middle of a game is something you want to hear again later, in plain words, with a blanket and something to drink.

Curious what an evening like that feels like with me, with a man who pays attention and doesn’t hand praise out for free? Read about a bdsm date, or send me a message on WhatsApp. No pressure, I’ll text you back, no rush.

Frequently asked questions

What women still ask about the good girl kink.

  1. Is a good girl kink the same as a praise kink?

A good girl kink is one specific form of a praise kink. With a praise kink, praise in general gets to you: “that’s it” or “exactly like that.” With a good girl kink, it’s this one phrase that does everything, often because a power dynamic rings through it. If you have one, you usually have something with the other too.

  2. Is good girl part of DDlg?

Good girl often belongs to DDlg, but it isn’t tied to it. Between two adults who choose DDlg together, it’s the standard way the daddy role voices praise and care. Plenty of women love it without any roles at all, simply as praise from a partner. How it works in fixed roles, you can read in the DDlg relationship piece.

  3. How do you ask your partner to call you good girl?

Ask outside the bedroom, at a calm moment, in one sentence: “I really like it when you call me good girl when I do something well.” No more explanation needed. Tell him when it works for you, during or right after, and in what tone. A partner who gets the timing wrong once deserves a second chance and a short pointer.

  4. Is a good girl kink normal?

Yes, a good girl kink is very common. According to Bustle, the hashtag #praisek1nk already had more than 568 million views in 2022. Finding praise from someone whose judgment matters a turn-on says nothing about weakness. A study of more than 900 Dutch people who practice BDSM even found they were less neurotic on average than the control group.

  5. Can you use good girl without bdsm?

Yes, good girl works without bdsm too, simply as praise during sex. No cuffs or rules required. It does help when there’s something to praise: a moment where you dared something, let go, or did exactly what he asked. Without that moment the praise quickly sounds hollow. Do agree beforehand that you both want it.
