Glossary
One word that lands harder than any other word in the scene, and that is exactly why it is so hard to say out loud.
Daddy Dom is the dominant who fills the role of a guiding, caring father figure opposite a little. He sets rules, keeps an eye on how his partner is holding up, and corrects where that is needed. The title is about the attitude, not about actual kinship or an age difference.
| Dutch term | Identical. Daddy Dom is used untranslated in Dutch; papa or vaderfiguur sounds odd in the scene. |
| The role is also called | caregiver, gender-neutral; mommy domme is the female counterpart |
| The dynamic is called | DDlg and DDlb, together CGL |
| Not to be confused with | a Master in the M/s sense; that title belongs to ownership, not care |
| Most important condition | a stop signal that sits outside the role, because inside the role much is asked and little is pushed back |
A Daddy Dom sets the frame for everyday things. Bedtime, phone use, what is and is not allowed without permission, how you ask. Correction is part of that, and it is usually small: a look, a repeated instruction, a moment in the corner.
What the role asks for most is that there is real care too. Rules without attention feel like arbitrariness. The practical difference between a Daddy Dom and a strict dominant is not in the rules but in what happens when someone does not meet them: one goes to find out why, the other punishes.
And it is not one-way traffic. The encyclopedia describes power exchange as something in which the dominant tries to fulfill the submissive’s desires, and states that in reality it is the submissive who holds the underlying control. Anyone who takes the father role seriously notices that first.
The title sounds hard, the core is soft. What a Daddy Dom sets up is above all a protective energy. Someone takes the lead so that you no longer have to guard anything, and that is where the whole appeal lies.
It is about a safe, familiar space. A place where you can let go because you know someone is watching over you. A mistake there is caught, not held against you, and for a while you do not have to perform. That warmth is the goal, not the backdrop.
And it is not sexual at all. The role is about care and about the calm of not having to make a decision. No eroticism, no expectation afterward. What you get is a sense of security, and that is the whole point.
There are plenty of forms of address. Sir, Mister, Master. Still, this one lands differently.
Tiidenberg and Paasonen describe in Sexuality & Culture how large the difference is between saying “Sir” and saying “Daddy.” One of their participants talks about the first time: love, arousal, vulnerability, fear, and a certain sense of wrongness all at once, until it suddenly came out. That word breaks through something, and that is exactly why it works.
The same researchers point out that this varies by language. In English and Spanish, saying “daddy” to a partner has been largely normalized by pop music. In other languages it is not at all. In Dutch it belongs to the second group, and that makes the threshold of saying it out loud once higher than the role itself ever is.
The appeal lies in being allowed to guide and being allowed to care, in one motion.
The same dominants named possessive submissives as one of the hard sides of their role. A dynamic in which one person decides everything and the other gets everything pulls at a side you do not see coming.
“Daddy is the same as Master.” No, and the difference is one of substance. According to the encyclopedia, the title Master belongs to the owner in a master/slave relationship, in which ownership is central. Daddy stands for the caring version of that same power.
“It is about real fathers.” No. It is a role between adults, with an attitude as the stake. There is no kinship in the play.
“A Daddy Dom has an obedient partner.” Often not. Tiidenberg and Paasonen describe a type of little that leans instead on a certain cheekiness and on testing limits. That resembles what a brat does, and it asks the same calm of the Daddy.
I am Victor, a gigolo, more than twenty-five years into BDSM and with a background as a psychotherapist. Being called Sir feels good to me, Master sounds too hard to me, and Daddy is not part of my play. So I know the role from the sidelines.
The hesitation around that one word, I see it every time. Women who know exactly what they want stay stuck for weeks on the question of whether they dare say it out loud. Once it is out the first time, the problem disappears.
And I see how often the care gets forgotten in the enthusiasm over the rules. Rules are the fun part to think up. The noticing is the part that truly makes the role.
On this site, the article on a dominant gigolo is about why surrender attracts, and the power of discipline and positions describes what rules do between two people.
Beyond this site, the open-access article by Tiidenberg and Paasonen is the only one that describes the role up close, seen from the other side.

No, you choose the form of address together. Researchers point out that the word is largely normalized in English and not at all in other languages, so in Dutch the threshold is higher. Sir, Mister, or something of your own works just as well.
