Nawa yoi

The warm daze the rope leaves behind, with a name that literally means rope drunk.

What is nawa yoi?

Nawa yoi (縄酔い, rope drunk) is the floaty, warm daze someone falls into during or after a rope session. The name literally means rope drunk: nawa is rope, yoi is drunkenness. It happens mostly to the one lying in the rope, sometimes to the one tying too, and it closely resembles subspace.

Japanese縄酔い, from nawa (rope) and yoi (drunkenness, daze)

Where nawa yoi comes from

The term comes from the rope scene itself. The Shibari Study Glossary describes nawa yoi as “rope drunk,” the feeling of subspace that arises during or after a rope session. The second part of the word explains what kind of daze is meant. Yoi (酔い) is, according to Wiktionary, drunkenness, the stem form of 酔う, to get drunk. What a glass does to your head, the rope does here to your head. Not from the alcohol, but from the letting go and the steady pressure. And from the trust you leave to someone else.

Why people seek nawa yoi

The pull is in that letting go. For a moment you have to steer nothing, and that gives a cottony calm that feels heavy and light at once. For you as a bottom that is often exactly what you get into the rope for: the head going quiet, the body taking over. That same daze has a downside. Anyone floating feels pain and tension less sharply, and it is exactly then that an arm going to sleep or a nerve pinched can stay unnoticed. That is why nawa yoi is a reason to check in along the way, and not to just keep going longer.
