Findom

Surrender you can wire over: a dynamic that lives almost entirely online and in which the giving itself is the point.

What is findom?

Findom (Dutch: findom) is the dynamic in which the submissive gives away money or gifts to the dominant party as a form of surrender. With findom the giving itself is the point and not the purchase of something. Findom takes place almost entirely online, and the two parties usually never meet.

What it is aboutthe giving itself, not a service or a purchase

How findom works in practice

Almost always in the same direction: from text to image. For Sexuality Research and Social Policy, McCracken and Brooks-Gordon surveyed 56 findommes in the UK and the US, and observed another 195 on money-slavery sites and social media.

Their finding on how it unfolds is clear: contact starts with text and moves on to image and voice. On webcam and video call the limits are more fluid, they say, because there the dominant is visibly present and adjusts language, voice and feeling to keep the fantasy holding together.

A typical course: someone reaches a profile through a social network, sends a first small amount, gets attention back, and the amount grows along with it. The money is transferred directly or through a wish list. Meeting is not part of it; if it does happen, the submissive goes shopping with his own money.

Why money works as the means here

Because a bank transfer does something words do not: it is irreversible. Where in other forms of D/s the surrender stays symbolic, findom leaves a trace on an account.

McCracken and Brooks-Gordon note that findom clearly produces sexual arousal for clients, but that the relationship can also be purely psychological, and is then about handing over control for an agreed period. That last point is the hinge: findom does not have to be a continuous state.

The internet made that form possible. Findom took its current shape only after the arrival of the internet, according to the encyclopedic description.

Why people do findom

For surrender that is felt right away.

For the giving side the appeal lies in the directness: an order you can carry out halfway, an amount you cannot. For the receiving side the power is visible without a body being involved.

  • For the one who gives the payoff is that the surrender does not have to be explained: the amount says it.
  • For the one who receives findom can be all sorts of things, according to McCracken and Brooks-Gordon, from a lifestyle choice within the BDSM scene that brings in money to purely economic, legitimate labor.
  • For both sides no physical meeting is needed, which lowers the threshold and keeps the distance large.

The encyclopedia is not gentle about that. It describes how paying becomes, for many submissives, a habituation that in the worst case leads to financial ruin. As causes it names the constant availability through the internet, targeted manipulation by dominants, and the fact that psychological dependence is wanted by both sides.

How the findom scene is put together

As a sliding scale. On one side findom is a lifestyle within the BDSM scene, on the other side it is simply paid work; McCracken and Brooks-Gordon explicitly place the practice on that continuum.

The role division is lopsided: participants can be any gender, but the receiving party is usually a woman and the giving party almost always a man. Outsiders also think the submissives are rich, while most, according to the same source, come from the lower middle class.

What findom is not

“Findom is sugar dating.” No. In sugar dating there is a relationship in exchange for the money and the power elements are missing; in findom the giving party expects no sexual contact in return, and often there is no physical contact at all.

“Findom is the same as handing everything over to someone.” Not that either. In a full transfer of power the submissive gives up, besides money, large parts of his self-determination too, and that often comes with an intimate relationship. Findom is separate from that.

“Anyone who asks for money is what she says she is.” Often not. Nick Chester described in Vice how widespread fake profiles are: a man from London transferred the equivalent of 12,400 dollars up to December 2021 and only discovered through a reverse image search that the photo was someone else’s. Sociologist Keith Durkin, who studies both findom and internet fraud, says newcomers see through a scam far less quickly.

“It has never been researched.” It has. There are scientific articles from 2007 and 2021, both based on years of observation of the sites and accounts in question.

What I see of it myself

I am Victor, a gigolo, twenty-five years in BDSM and trained as a psychotherapist. I do not offer findom and I do not want to offer it: I work with people in the same room, and this is by definition a form at a distance. What I do have to say about it comes from conversations.

The question is almost never about money. Anyone curious about this wants to know whether surrender is also possible without touch. Findom is one answer to that, not the only one.

The second thing, and it is the reason I am strict about this: with every other form of power play you can go back. A scene stops at a safeword. A bank transfer stops nowhere.

What you can do yourself

  • Do a reverse image search on every photo before you transfer anything; that is what the victims in the Vice article did too late.
  • Agree on an amount and a period, so findom stays an agreement and does not become a continuous state.
  • Do not give out personal details and keep the payment separate from your own name.
  • Say your limit out loud and tell someone outside the dynamic what that limit is.
  • Seek help if you give more than you meant to, from your GP or a debt counselor; habituation here is a documented risk and not a personal failing.

On this site you will find the dynamic findom is a form of at D/s, and the articles on humiliation and shame are about the stimulus that giving away money leans on.

Beyond this site, McCracken and Brooks-Gordon are the only ones to let findommes themselves speak about how they set limits, and Vice shows how the scam works in practice.

Where this fits on this site

Findom is not part of what I do: I work in the same room as the other person and not through an account. If you are looking for surrender without money as the means, the page about the BDSM date shows how such an evening is built up.

Frequently asked questions

What people still ask about findom.

  1. What is findom?

Findom is the dynamic in which the submissive gives away money or gifts to the dominant party as a form of surrender. The word is the shortening of the English financial domination. With findom the giving itself is the point and not the purchase of something.

  2. Is findom the same as sugar dating?

No. In sugar dating there is a relationship in exchange for the money and the power element is missing; in findom the giving party expects no sexual contact in return and there is often no physical contact at all. Findom also usually runs entirely online, so the two never meet.

  3. How does findom work in practice?

Contact starts with text and moves on to image and voice, and the money is transferred directly or through a wish list. In their study of 56 findommes, McCracken and Brooks-Gordon found that the limits are more fluid on webcam than in text. The relationship can also be purely psychological and hold for an agreed period.

  4. Is findom dangerous?

Two risks are documented: fraud and habituation. Vice described a man who transferred the equivalent of 12,400 dollars up to December 2021 to a profile with a stolen photo. And paying can become a habituation that in the worst case leads to financial ruin. Agreeing on an amount and a period in advance is the main brake with findom.

  5. Who can you turn to with questions about findom?

Victor, a gigolo with twenty-five years of experience in BDSM and a background as a psychotherapist. He does not offer findom, because he works in the same room as the other person and not through an account; he is happy to talk about whether surrender is possible without touch.
