Humbler

A tool that doesn't hurt as long as you stay exactly as it wants, and that gives you no other choice.

What is a humbler?

A humbler is a bondage device in which a ring closes around the base of the scrotum while it is pulled backward between the legs. That ring sits in the middle of a bar that runs behind the thighs. The result: the legs have to stay bent and standing upright is no longer possible. There is no Dutch word for it.

Dutch termnone; Dutch uses humbler untranslated, from the English to humble. See the encyclopedia entry under cock and ball torture.

Why a humbler works without anything happening

Because the device leaves the punishment to the wearer.

A humbler doesn’t strike, doesn’t pinch and doesn’t press. It only anchors the scrotum to a bar behind the thighs, so any attempt to straighten the legs pulls straight at your own anatomy. Stay still in the folded position and you feel little. Straighten your back to shift for a moment and you correct yourself. Hence the name: the tool forces a posture instead of pain.

That also makes it harder to dose than it looks. With a clamp, the person turning it decides how far it goes; with a humbler, fatigue decides, because you can’t hold a folded posture forever.

What to watch for with a humbler

The attention belongs on the closure, not on the posture.

Anything that closes around the base of the scrotum can get in the way of blood flow, and the urology literature is unpleasantly clear about it. In Case Reports in Surgery, Neel Patel and colleagues show how badly things run once a metal ring gets trapped around penis and scrotum: after a day it takes heavy tools to get it off, and the longer it lasts, the smaller the chance the tissue comes through without lasting damage. Time is the only factor that counts here.

A humbler is not a ring you can forget for weeks, but the lesson holds fully: the closure has to come off without tools, and a wing nut that gets stuck is exactly where it goes wrong. In practice that means four things. Set it tight enough that the scrotum doesn’t slip back, and no tighter. Agree on a time, because this posture runs out at the hips. Check the color and feel of the scrotum instead of asking whether it’s still okay. And lay out tools that get the nuts off in one move, even in the dark.

Where this fits on this site

A humbler belongs to scenes where a man is the receiving party, and that isn’t the role I play on a date: with me the control sits on my side, right down to orgasm control. So this tool falls outside what I offer. If you want to know what is possible with pain play and forced postures, that’s on the page about the BDSM date.

Patel, Ariel Schulman, Jonathan Bloom et al., Case Reports in Surgery 2018, article 5216826, 27 March 2018. Supplies the description of the humbler as a bondage device with a ring-shaped scrotum clamp that closes around the base of the scrotum while it is pulled backward between the legs, the mounting on a bar or rods behind the thighs at the level of the buttocks, and the result that the wearer has to keep the legs folded and cannot stand upright.

Frequently asked questions

What people still ask about the humbler.

  1. What is a humbler?

A humbler is a bondage device in which a ring closes around the base of the scrotum while it is pulled backward between the legs, mounted on a bar that runs behind the thighs. That forces the wearer to keep the legs bent, and standing upright is no longer possible. A humbler belongs to CBT and has no Dutch name.

  2. Is a humbler dangerous?

The risk of a humbler sits in the closure around the base of the scrotum, not in the posture. Anything that clamps shut there can hinder blood flow: the urology literature holds cases of strangulation by a metal ring that had to be cut through with an industrial bolt cutter, and one where the man died of sepsis after more than forty-eight hours. So make sure the nuts come off without tools, and check color and feel instead of asking whether it’s still okay.

  3. Who can you turn to with questions about a humbler?

Victor, a gigolo with twenty-five years of BDSM experience and a background as a psychotherapist. A humbler falls outside what he offers, because in his dates the control sits on his side, but he’ll think along with no obligation about what the tool does and where the limit is. I'm Victor. This tool isn't part of what I offer, but the question behind it, how you force a posture without hurting anyone, is. Ask it with no obligation, and I'll tell you honestly when something falls outside what I offer.
