Escort

What the word escort points to exactly: the person you book, not the agency around them.

What is an escort?

An escort is a sex worker or companion who is paid for their company, and often for intimacy. An escort usually visits the client (outcall) or receives them (incall). The word refers to the person, not to the agency that arranges the bookings: that is called an escort agency.

How an escort works

You see an escort by appointment, and the meeting is almost always indoors. The encyclopedia describes an escort as a sex worker who, unlike someone on the street, does not display the profession in public and with whom the client makes an appointment, usually by phone or online. That same work can be incall (the client comes to the escort) or outcall (the escort comes to the client).

An ordinary way it goes: you want company for an evening, you make an appointment, and you see each other at your place or in a hotel. According to the encyclopedia, escorts are also booked for longer appointments, staying with the client or traveling along on a vacation or a business trip. So part of the work is about hours together, not about minutes. What does and does not happen within that appointment, you agree on in advance.

Where the word comes from

The core of the word is going along. The dictionary Wiktionary gives as one of the meanings “a person accompanying another at a social event”, and as a separate, originally veiled meaning “a sex worker who does not work in a brothel, but with whom clients make an appointment”. Those two lie over each other in the word: being company, and being paid company.

That explains why an escort is not the same as street prostitution or a brothel. The work is private, by appointment, and often turns just as much on being somewhere together as on sex. One escort works through an agency, another arranges everything herself as an independent sex worker.

Why people book an escort

The pull is company without the weight of a relationship. Someone who is really there for you for an evening, gives attention, and leaves again without anything being expected of you afterward. For some that is intimacy, for others mainly being together.

  • For you an escort can be a way to experience something that is not in your life right now, or to get used to closeness quietly without the pressure of dating.
  • For anyone who needs discretion the private, by-appointment form is exactly the pull: it takes place where and when you want it.
  • For anyone who would rather seek company than sex there is room for exactly that. An escort is also booked for a dinner or a trip, where being together is the core.

What an escort is not: a real relationship or a solution for loneliness that sits deeper. It is genuine contact within a booked frame, and that frame stays. Anyone who hopes it will turn on its own into something lasting is deceived.

Misunderstandings about escorts

“An escort and an escort agency are the same.” No, and that is the most important distinction. The encyclopedia describes an escort agency as a company that supplies escorts to clients. The escort is the person; the agency is the go-between that makes the appointment and keeps part of the money.

“An escort is always sex.” Not necessarily. The word covers company just as much as intimacy, and escorts are also booked for an evening out or a trip. What the appointment involves differs from person to person and is discussed in advance.

“An escort works on the street.” Exactly not. An escort does not display the profession in public and works by appointment, indoors, which sets it apart from street prostitution.

What I see of it myself

I am Victor, gigolo, more than twenty-five years into BDSM and with a background as a psychotherapist. I am a male escort myself who arranges everything without an agency, so I know the work from the inside.

What strikes me every time: most women who book me do not come first of all for sex. They come for attention, for company, for someone who listens without it costing anything in their ordinary life. The intimacy is often there, but it rarely stands at the front.

And this is part of it: without an agency I decide for myself who I meet and how. That makes the contact more direct, and it puts the arrangements between you and me, without anyone in between who profits from it. What such an evening with me looks like is on the page about the boyfriend experience.
