First time at a swingers club: a practical guide for women
Most women going to a swingers club for the first time have thought about it for months or years. What holds them back is rarely the sex. It is the logistics: where do you go, what does it look like, what is expected of you, and how do you get out if you do not like it.
This piece answers that, without the “do you dare” tone that usually hangs around it.
Which night to pick
This is the most important decision and the one people get wrong most often.
A weeknight or an explicit beginners’ night is almost always the better start. It is quieter and the mood is less rushed. There are also more people around who are still just watching themselves.
At a sold-out Saturday party you are in the middle of something right away. That can be great, but not as a first introduction: there is too much at once to take in and too little room to sit down somewhere quietly.
Many clubs also have an introduction evening with an explanation beforehand. If a club that suits you has one, take it.
What it really looks like
Different from what the website suggests, and that is usually good news.
A cross-section of the country walks around: ordinary bodies, ordinary ages, far more variety than in the photos. The average age in most clubs is higher than people expect, plenty of people in their fifties and sixties, and that is exactly the group that moves around most at ease.
There is almost always an area where nothing happens: a bar, a lounge, a place to sit and talk. Many visitors spend most of the evening there.
Watching is allowed, and it is not half a visit
This is the question asked most often and answered worst. In a swingers club you are allowed to just watch, without any obligation to join in. No one is surprised by that; many visitors do exactly that, including people who have been coming for years.
If you only want to taste the atmosphere and nothing more, that is enough. You do not have to justify yourself to anyone and no one keeps score of what you did or did not do.
Saying no
Where it goes wrong in practice is not that something happens you do not want. It is that you do not know how to turn something down without being unkind.
The rule is simpler than you think: a friendly no is enough, and in a good club it is accepted without discussion. You do not have to give a reason and you do not have to explain what you do want instead.
If you find that hard, that is one of the better reasons to bring someone. With a companion beside you, you do not have to reject anyone. You are visibly with someone, and that handles ninety percent of it without a word.
The house rules that apply everywhere
No photos, no video, no sound. Strictly forbidden in almost every club, and actively watched. Your phone can usually come in but belongs in your bag or locker. That works both ways: you make no images, and no images are made of you.
No means no, and it is enforced. If you feel treated badly, you speak to the staff. That is what they are there for, and in a decent club they step in.
Hygiene. Condoms are laid out everywhere and showers are standard. For penetration, condom use is the norm in most clubs. For oral, the honest answer is that it does not happen everywhere. So do not assume someone else’s norm is yours. Say what you want.
What you bring
Little. A bag with what you want to wear, your ID, and cash or a card. Many clubs have a dress code that is less strict than it looks on the site. When in doubt, give them a call.
Why women bring someone
Rarely because they do not dare go alone, though that happens too. Mostly because it changes the whole evening.
You are not standing at the bar alone. You do not have to wait and see whether anyone comes, which takes away the whole scale the fear of “nobody will want me” leans on. And there is always someone to turn to when it gets to be too much.
Beforehand I mostly do this: ask what you want and what you definitely do not, suggest two or three clubs with the reasons why, and agree on how we leave when you want to. That last part is no detail. Knowing you can leave without discussion is what makes you stay.
More about that is on Scenarios. And if you only want advice on which club suits you without booking anything, that is possible too, and it costs you nothing.
