Hiring a plus one for a wedding or party: how discreet it stays

An invitation with “and partner” on it can sit on your counter for weeks. Not because you do not want to go. Because you know exactly what happens if you come alone: the same questions, the same looks, the same aunt who means so well.

Hiring a plus one solves that. It is less unusual than you think, and a good deal less complicated than most people imagine.

Why women do this

Rarely to impress. The reasons I hear most are more practical and more human.

A brother’s or friend’s wedding, soon after a divorce, where everyone knows and no one brings it up. A family day where your mother has asked the same thing for three years. A business dinner where coming alone is awkward in a setting that expects couples.

And sometimes it is simpler: you have no appetite for an evening where you keep having to explain yourself.

What you actually buy

Company that adapts effortlessly to the setting. Someone who behaves the way the evening asks, who knows when to talk and when not to, and who does not stand out.

That last part is the most important and the least spectacular. A good plus one does not get noticed. No flashy clothes, no stories that draw attention, no behavior anyone talks about later.

The backstory you agree on

This is the part most people underestimate, and it is exactly where it goes wrong if you skip it.

We agree in detail beforehand on how we “met,” how long we have been together, and the small things that come with it: where I work in that story, whether we live together, what we did last summer.

It is precisely those small things that make it believable. A story rarely falls apart on the big line. It falls apart on a casual question from someone just being friendly. “And where did you two meet?” is a question you answer once and that then comes back four more times from different people.

So keep it close to the truth where you can. The less you have to remember, the more natural it sounds.

What else you agree on

Who knows what. Sometimes one friend knows and no one else. That is fine, but then I need to know, because then there is someone in the room who reacts differently than the rest.

Arrival and departure. Arriving together is the most common but not required. If you want to arrive separately because someone knows your car, we do that.

How physical it is. A hand on your back, an arm around you for a photo, or nothing at all. That differs per couple and per crowd. Agree on it, and then there is nothing to figure out on the spot.

When you want to leave. Agree on a moment when we leave no matter what, even if you are having a good time. Then you do not have to make that decision on an evening when everyone is seated at the table.

And afterward?

We agree on that separately, and the answer can be: nothing.

A plus-one evening does not have to lead anywhere, and a good share of these bookings simply end at the door. What I want to know beforehand is which of the two is your starting point. Not to lock you in, but so there is no awkward silence in the car home where you are both wondering what the other is thinking.

You are allowed to change that starting point along the way, either direction. What does not work is leaving it entirely open, because then the subject comes up at exactly the wrong moment.

How discreet it really is

No one notices a thing, provided the conversation happens beforehand. That is the whole condition.

Nothing shows on your statement if you pay cash. There is no agency that calls. I know the names I need to know and I do not get caught out on a question I should know the answer to. And afterward there is no contact unless you want it.

The only way something like this comes out is if the story does not hold up. That is why that conversation is no formality but the most important part of the preparation.

Practical

Plan well ahead. Weddings and holidays fill up fast. Count on the usual rates. There is no surcharge because it is a party, and there is no couple surcharge if you book as a pair.

What else is possible is on Scenarios, and the rates are on Pricing. If you are unsure whether it fits your crowd, just describe the situation, and I will tell you honestly whether I think it will work.

And finally, something women often say afterward: the evening itself was easier than expected. The questions and looks you dreaded barely came. Precisely because someone was standing next to you. The attention shifts automatically once you no longer walk in alone, and that is exactly the effect you bring someone for. Not to impress. To let an evening simply be an evening.
