Glossary
The first tie almost everyone learns, and the only one where a single cinch makes the difference.
Double column tie (Dutch: dubbele kolomboei) is a rope cuff that binds two limbs side by side, with a cinch between them. That cinch, the cinch, turns one loop into two separate openings. That keeps two wrists or ankles from sliding toward each other, and it keeps the cuff from pulling tight.
| Dutch term | dubbele kolomboei. The English name double column tie is used the same way |
| What a column is | a wrist, ankle, thigh, or a beam: anything rope can go around |
| Difference from the single column tie | there two limbs are treated as one column, without rope between them |
| Where it sits | wrists in front of or behind the body, ankles, or two thighs together |
| Main risk | too tight, and the nerve underneath |
The Shibari Study glossary describes what that cinch delivers: through the cinch or kannuki you get two separate openings, which helps keep the cuff from rotating around the limbs. Rotation is the real problem. A cuff that tilts moves its pressure to places where you did not lay it.
Because it is simple and behaves neatly. The wraps lie side by side rather than over each other, the knot ends up out of reach of the bound hands, and the same cuff works on wrists, ankles and thighs.
The shape says nothing about the tension. A tidy double column tie can still sit too tight, and the cinch tightens things afterward.
Khodulev and colleagues described in Cureus ten people with nerve injury from rope, of which 81.3 percent of the injuries were in the radial nerve. Recovery ranged from two minutes to five months. Their advice: spread the pressure evenly, agree on time limits and keep asking along the way. I lay ties like this myself on a BDSM date, where I keep an eye on exactly that pressure and time.
Frequently asked questions
A double column tie, in Dutch a dubbele kolomboei, is a rope cuff that binds two limbs side by side with a cinch between them. That cinch turns one loop into two separate openings, so the two wrists or ankles cannot slide toward each other.
With a single column tie, everything the cuff wraps is treated as one column. One limb, an anchor point, or two wrists against each other. With a double column tie, rope runs between two columns. Without that cinch, the cuff can rotate around the limbs and shift its pressure.
Loose enough to slide two fingers under, and you check that after the cinch. Nerve damage happens fast, is cumulative and often irreversible. Khodulev and colleagues advise in Cureus to spread the pressure evenly, agree on time limits and keep asking along the way.
