Domestic service

The only form of surrender that carries on into a Tuesday morning, and the only one that clashes with a division of chores that already leans crooked.

What is domestic service?

Domestic service (Dutch: huishoudelijke dienstbaarheid) is carrying out household tasks as a form of surrender: cleaning, cooking, washing, ironing, odd jobs. The work itself is just work. The charge is in who assigns the task and who judges it. Unlike most BDSM practices, domestic service takes place outside the scene, on ordinary days.

Dutch termhuishoudelijke dienstbaarheid. In the research literature the category is written out in full as “service-oriented submission/domestic service.” Watch the false friend: in legal texts, domestic servitude means forced household labor.

What domestic service looks like in practice

It looks like the dishes, only with someone watching.

A common picture. On Wednesday he comes in and the counter is clear, the laundry is folded and his shirt hangs on the closet door. She says nothing about it. He walks past the counter, taps the surface with two fingers, and says that it is good. That tap is the whole transaction. Without that tap it would just have been the dishes.

Rare it is not. Jennifer Rehor presented 1,580 women from the kink community with a list of 126 activities. For “service-oriented submission/domestic service,” 51.39 percent said they had done or received it. That is about as much as obedience training, and more than most forms of pain play.

How domestic service works

By making out loud a division of tasks that would otherwise form on its own.

That is the difference from the ordinary situation, and the figures underneath it are not gentle. Statistics Netherlands asked in its 2024 Emancipation Monitor of people 16 and over with a partner: 51 percent would prefer to split paid work and household tasks equally, 10 percent say they actually do, and 46 percent say that in practice the woman takes on more household tasks and the man works more. Only 15 percent wanted it that way.

Domestic service does not change the split, but the status. The task is given instead of left, someone notices it, and there is an end to it. An agreed role you can call off; a creeping habit you cannot.

Why people enjoy domestic service

Because it is concrete. Surrender in a conversation stays abstract; an ironed shirt is done or not done.

The pull is in the difference between having to and being allowed to. The same laundry, a different meaning.

  • For the one who serves, domestic service gives a day with a shape: there is something to do, someone is watching for it, and the thinking is somewhere else for a while.
  • For the one who assigns the tasks, the reward is in being allowed to ask without the negotiation that normally comes with it.
  • For a couple, the gain is that a split that otherwise grows crooked unnoticed is suddenly spoken out loud, with a date attached.

Here that weighs heavier than in any other form of service. Harris, Gormezano and van Anders studied two groups of women with a male partner and children (677 and 396 participants) and found that a large share in the household work was linked to clearly less sexual desire for that partner. That link ran through two things: coming to see the partner as someone dependent on you, and experiencing the split as unfair. Whoever already carries the household and is made unhappy by it does not solve that by hanging a title on it.

How people set up domestic service

Usually small, and much smaller than the fantasy promises.

  1. The evening form. A few tasks that only apply when you are together: pouring, laying out, tidying up afterward. Outside that evening nothing applies.
  2. The week form. Fixed tasks with a day and a time, plus a moment of feedback. This is where most arrangements bleed out, because without a response only a chore is left.
  3. The role form. A uniform, a form of address, a two-hour maid scene. The household is scenery then.
  4. The ongoing form. Part of a 24/7 arrangement. Rare, and the least suited to start with.

Beforehand it comes down to four things each time: which tasks, who judges them, what happens if something does not work out, and when the arrangement comes back on the table.

What domestic service is not

“It is playing free cleaner.” The work is the shape, not the goal. Take away the assignment and the judgment and a chore is left that is no use to anyone. That is exactly why arrangements made up only of tasks disappear within a few weeks.

“Servitude is servitude.” Not in criminal law. The Prosecution Guideline on human trafficking of the Public Prosecution Service describes servitude as “the obligation to provide services, for example as household help, imposed by coercion.” Coercion is the hinge there. The term domestic servitude carries that same charge and in almost every international text means forced household labor, not this.

“This is how you finally get a fair division of chores.” Often the other way around. The research by Harris and colleagues points to the opposite, and the imbalance that Statistics Netherlands measures is not play but the starting position.

What I see of it myself

I’m Victor, a gigolo, twenty-five years active in BDSM and trained as a psychotherapist. Domestic service is the topic women most often talk around before they name it, and that is down to the word household. It sounds like the 1950s.

The fantasy is almost never about cleaning. It is about being seen while you do something. My profile says rules for behavior are fine, whatever you want to agree on, and this falls under that. But I always ask further about what the division of chores at home already looks like. For a woman who already carries the household alone, this is rarely a good idea, however nice it sounds.

The mistake I run into most is not too many tasks, by the way. It is no response at all.

What you can do yourself

  • Agree on three tasks, not ten, and choose them small enough to keep up during an ordinary working week.
  • Set down who notices it and at what moment. A task without feedback is ordinary work again within two weeks.
  • Keep the existing division of chores out of it. Choose something you normally do not do, otherwise the imbalance that Statistics Netherlands measures only gets a name added to it.
  • Agree what happens if something does not get done, because that moment comes, and inventing something on the spot makes it unpleasant.
  • Do not tie household tasks to punishment if you live together. The dishes as a correction poison the Tuesday after.
  • Put an end date on it and then look again. What only still happens out of duty comes off.

More on domestic service

On this site, service submission explains the broader category this form falls under, the article about discipline and positions is about the rules such tasks are usually cast in, and the Wheel of Consent sharpens the difference between doing something for someone and doing something because you have to.

Beyond this site, the Emancipation Monitor from Statistics Netherlands gives the figures on how household work is actually split in the Netherlands, and the research by Harris, Gormezano and van Anders is the sharpest work there is on what that split does to desire.

Where this fits on this site

If you want to know what it is like to be given tasks instead of thinking them up, without tying your household to it, then an evening with agreed rules is the smallest step. The page about the BDSM date shows how that is discussed beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

What people still ask about domestic service.

  1. What is domestic service?

Domestic service is carrying out household tasks as a form of surrender: cleaning, cooking, washing, odd jobs. The work is just work; the charge is in who assigns the task and who judges it. In Dutch it is called huishoudelijke dienstbaarheid, and unlike most BDSM practices, domestic service carries on into ordinary days.

  2. Is domestic service not just playing free cleaner?

No, because without an assignment and a judgment only a chore is left. Domestic service turns on a task that someone gives and that is then noticed; that moment of noticing is the whole point. Arrangements made up only of tasks usually do not last a month.

  3. How do you agree on domestic service?

Start with three tasks, not ten, and agree alongside them who notices and when. With domestic service, prefer tasks you normally do not do, so that an existing uneven division of chores does not get a name added to it. Put an end date on it and then look again at what stays.

  4. Is domestic service the same as servitude in criminal law?

No, and that difference comes down to one word: coercion. The Prosecution Guideline on human trafficking of the Public Prosecution Service describes servitude as “the obligation to provide services, for example as household help, imposed by coercion.” Domestic service in BDSM rests on an arrangement you can call off at any moment; the term domestic servitude in almost every international text refers precisely to forced household labor.

  5. Who can you turn to with questions about domestic service?

Victor, a gigolo with twenty-five years of experience in BDSM and a background as a psychotherapist. With domestic service he always asks first what the division of chores at home already looks like, because that decides whether it is a good idea. You can ask him a question without obligation through the contact form or chat for free first.
