Uniform fetish

The one garment that also does something to the person putting it on, and the only one with a criminal provision of its own.

What is uniform fetish?

Uniform fetish is sexual arousal from service dress and from the authority, profession, or rank that such clothing announces. With uniform fetish the garment does its work through what it means, not through the fabric. Common uniforms are those of the police, the army, nursing, the fire service, and the maid.

English termuniform fetishism, in profiles often shortened to uniform
Also known asuniform fetishism; the moment a story is built around it, it’s called roleplay
Where the word comes fromLatin ūniformis, of one form; the noun uniform for a garment only exists from the era of the standing armies
Not to be confused witha fetish in the narrow sense, where the object itself carries the arousal apart from what it represents
Legally in the Netherlandsno general uniform ban, but article 435a Sr for clothing that expresses a political aim worn in public
Legally in Germany§132a StGB makes wearing domestic or foreign uniforms without authorization punishable, with up to a year in prison

What uniform fetish looks like in practice

Usually one garment and a handful of rules around it, and rarely a complete replica uniform.

A common picture: she opens the door in a nurse’s tunic from a party shop and agrees that for that hour he will address her as “nurse” throughout and not by her name. The buttons are wrong and it makes no difference. The work is done by the form of address plus the fact that both of them know what the tunic points to.

The second form turns on who keeps the clothing on. One stays fully dressed, the other does not, and that difference carries the whole scene. A uniform scene therefore asks for less preparation than other power play: the division of roles already sits in the clothing.

Where the word uniform comes from

From the shape, not from the profession. The Etymologisch Woordenboek van het Nederlands first lists uniform as an adjective meaning “the same,” with a citation from 1565 about a jurisdiction that was “uniform across all of Delfland,” from the Latin ūnifōrmis, from ūnus plus fōrma.

The garment comes after that. The noun uniform for service dress is recorded in Dutch from 1742, in “the uniform of their regiment,” as a shortening of uniforme kledij (uniform attire); De Vries notes that from the seventeenth century it was applied to the matching clothing of soldiers when the standing armies came into being. A uniform is therefore meant to make people resemble each other, and that is exactly what a uniform fetish turns around.

Why people find uniforms arousing

Because a uniform is an agreement without a conversation, and because it also does something to the person putting it on.

That last part has been measured, and the effect is not confined to the onlooker. Guillaume Pech and Emilie Caspar had forty participants in Frontiers in Psychology take turns wearing civilian clothing, a military uniform, and a Red Cross uniform during a task in which they could give each other real electric shocks. In the Red Cross uniform they behaved more socially than in civilian clothing and their brain response to the other person’s pain was stronger; in the military uniform, the feeling that they themselves caused the act went up. The same person, three coats, three kinds of behavior.

What it yields differs by which side of the clothing you are on.

  • For the person wearing the uniform, the bearing shifts on its own. The clothing supplies the straight back and the tone to match, and that saves precisely the bit of acting many people are embarrassed by.
  • For the person watching, the arousal sits in the promise of competence and authority, and in the idea that someone makes that role private for you for a while.
  • For a couple, it is the cheapest entrance to power play there is. One garment and one form of address replace half an hour of negotiating who has which role.

The researchers who invented this field draw the line themselves. Hajo Adam and Adam Galinsky coined the term enclothed cognition in 2012 for the idea that clothing influences the wearer’s thinking through its symbolic meaning. In 2025 they published, together with Cassandra Horton in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, a meta-analysis of 105 effects from 40 studies across 24 articles, with 3,789 participants in total, and it casts doubt on the early studies from their own corner. What holds up are the studies from after 2015. A uniform does do something, then, but less spectacularly than the first publications promised.

The moment you step outside with it, and the line runs much stricter in Germany than in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands has no general ban on wearing uniforms, but two provisions around it. Article 435a of the Dutch Criminal Code punishes anyone who “in public wears or carries garments or conspicuous insignia that express a particular political aim,” with detention of at most twelve days or a fine of the second category. Article 435b punishes insignia that could give the impression that your conduct enjoys the support or recognition of the state.

Germany is more direct. §132a of the Strafgesetzbuch makes it punishable to wear, without authorization, “inländische oder ausländische Uniformen, Amtskleidungen oder Amtsabzeichen,” with a prison sentence of up to a year or a fine. Subsection 2 counts under that everything that is “zum Verwechseln ähnlich” (confusingly similar), and subsection 4 makes confiscation of the garment possible. A convincing replica police tunic is clothing behind your own front door and, on the street in Germany, a criminal offense.

Misconceptions about uniform fetish

“It’s about the fabric.” No. With leather and latex the material carries the charge, and that is why leather became a subculture of its own. With uniform fetish the meaning carries the charge, and a cheap imitation therefore often works just as well as the real thing.

“A uniform fetish says something about political preference.” That follows from nowhere. Dutch law does draw a line there, though: a uniform with a political sign on it is a different matter from a nurse’s tunic.

“Then you have to be good at acting.” Usually the reverse. Anyone who struggles with roleplay actually gets away with it more easily with a uniform, because the clothing fills in most of the character.

What I make of it

I’m Victor, a gigolo, more than twenty-five years in BDSM and trained as a psychotherapist. A sexy uniform is on my yes-list, along with stockings, a short skirt, and high heels, and I enjoy roleplay.

This is often a first step. Women who don’t yet dare say the word dominant out loud will ask whether they may open the door in something specific. The same question, only by way of the wardrobe.

And one practical observation: the sticking point is almost never the clothing but the form of address. Someone can walk around in a tunic for an hour without anything tipping over; it tips over at the first “nurse” or “sir.”

What to watch for with a uniform fetish

  • Agree on the form of address before you buy the garment, because that is the part that carries the scene.
  • Leave a real service uniform at home. A borrowed tunic from someone’s employer can touch that person’s job, and that is a risk outside your agreement.
  • Don’t take it out onto the street, certainly not in Germany, where §132a StGB carries up to a year in prison.
  • Pick one recognizable element instead of a full outfit. A tunic, a cap, or a badge is enough, and taking it off is at once the clearest signal that the role stops.

More on uniform fetish

On this site, roleplay sets out how you build up a scenario and step out of it again.

Beyond that, the research by Pech and Caspar is freely readable and surprisingly concrete about what a uniform does to the wearer, and §132a StGB gives the German line in ten lines.

Where this fits on this site

If you like the idea that someone stands at the door who is not himself, that belongs to what I do. The page on the BDSM date shows how we settle in advance who is who and when that stops again.

Frequently asked questions

What people still ask about uniform fetish.

  1. What is uniform fetish?

Uniform fetish is sexual arousal from service dress and from the authority, profession, or rank that such clothing announces. With uniform fetish the garment works through what it means and not through the fabric, and that is exactly the difference with leather or latex. Common ones are police, army, nursing, fire service, and the maid.

  2. Why does a uniform arouse?

Because it announces a division of roles without anything having to be discussed, and because it also changes the wearer. Guillaume Pech and Emilie Caspar had forty participants wear civilian clothing, a military uniform, and a Red Cross uniform: in the Red Cross uniform they behaved more socially and their brains responded more strongly to another’s pain, and in the military uniform the sense of agency went up.

  3. Is wearing a uniform a crime?

Not at home, in public sometimes, and in Germany far sooner than in the Netherlands. The Netherlands has no general uniform ban, but article 435a of the Dutch Criminal Code forbids clothing or conspicuous insignia in public that express a particular political aim. In Germany, §132a StGB makes wearing domestic or foreign uniforms without authorization punishable by up to a year in prison.

  4. What is the difference between uniform fetish and roleplay?

With uniform fetish the clothing carries the arousal, with roleplay the scenario carries it. The two often run together, and many people who think they are bad at acting get away with it fine with a uniform, because the clothing fills in most of the character.

  5. Who can you turn to with questions about uniform fetish?

Victor, a gigolo in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, more than twenty-five years active in BDSM and trained as a psychotherapist. Roleplay is on his yes-list and a sexy uniform too, so you can ask without fuss how to set up a scene like that and how it stops again. That can be through the contact form or first via free chat.
