What is throat-fucking?

Throat-fucking (Latin: irrumatio, in slang face-fucking) is oral sex where the one with the penis thrusts and the mouth stays passive. That is the exact opposite of fellatio, where the mouth does the work. The act looks like deep throat; the difference is who sets the pace and the depth.

Who steers, and why that is the whole difference

The role reversal. The page on irrumatio puts it sharply: in irrumatio someone thrusts his penis into another person’s mouth, as against fellatio, where the penis is actively worked by the other. The difference sits mainly in which side takes the active part. The Latin verb irrumāre carried something forceful too; in the Roman sexual vocabulary irrumatio counted as a form of oral rape.

That is not a linguistic footnote. With deep throat the one giving can slow herself down. With throat-fucking that steering wheel sits with the other person, while the one with the occupied mouth cannot say a thing. So everything you would normally handle with words has to live in a gesture agreed beforehand.

What the throat does meanwhile

Breathing and swallowing at the same time, and the two do not go together. The throat is one shared passage for air and for food, as the StatPearls chapter on swallowing sets out, and that is exactly why swallowing is also a protective reflex for the airway. During the pharyngeal phase of every swallow, breathing stops for roughly half a second to a second and a half, because the vocal cords close. That is how the body keeps anything from running into the windpipe.

Translate that to practice and you see why pace matters more than depth here. Someone who is thrusting cannot feel when the other is in the middle of one of those breath pauses. Where the law watches

At the noticing of signals. Since 1 July 2024 the Netherlands has article 240 of the Criminal Code: negligent sexual assault, punishable by up to two years, for anyone who performs sexual acts while having serious reason to suspect that the other does not want them. Intent is not required. For throat-fucking that means quite a lot, because the person steering is also the person who has to see the signals: the other cannot speak them.

The first question is almost always about stopping and not about how far it goes. Rightly so. Agree how someone comes out of it, how long a run of thrusts lasts, and that the gesture always wins, even when it does not look like it is meant.
