What is irrumatio?

Irrumatio is the Latin term for oral sex where the active partner, the irrumator, thrusts his penis into the mouth of a passive receiver. It is the mirror image of fellatio, where the mouth does the work. The word comes from classical Latin, where it carried a forceful, dominating charge.

Where the word comes from

Irrumatio comes from the Latin verb irrumare, a derivation of ruma, “nipple”. The dictionary of Lewis and Short gives the root meaning as “to give the breast, to suckle”, after which the term took on the obscene sense of forcing someone into oral sex. In the Roman world irrumatio was not a neutral act but an act of domination, as in the notorious opening line of Catullus, Pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo. Besides Catullus, the same dictionary also points to the Priapea and to Martial, poets who used the term in the same mocking, threatening sense. The classicist J.N. Adams explains the choice of word through a Roman association between feeding and sex: irrumare originally meant something like “to insert the nipple”.

What the distinction from fellatio means

The whole value of the word sits in who moves. In irrumatio the one with the penis steers and the mouth stays still; in fellatio it’s exactly the reverse and the mouth does the work. Whoever uses the Latin term wants to name that role difference sharply, because in everyday language it disappears under a single word. That is exactly why the old word lives on in modern kink jargon, where the difference between steering and taking it is the heart of the play. Because the receiving partner is passive and can’t talk, a clear stop signal matters here more than anywhere else; how that works in practice is on throat-fucking.
