Sissification
The suffix already gives it away: this is something that is built up, not something that lasts one evening.
What is sissification?
Sissification is the long-term feminization of a man in clothing, posture, voice, and behavior, usually with humiliation as the means and with a sissy as the role name. The difference from a one-off scene is in the suffix: -fication denotes a transformation, so something that is built up rather than played out.
| First recorded | sissification from 1915; the verb sissify from 1897 |
| Also known as | forced feminization, forcefem, sissy training |
| The role | sissy for the one who undergoes it |
| Means | degradation, usually with crossdressing alongside |
| Form | ongoing: rules, tasks, a role name that carries through the whole week |
| Dictionary status | no entry; the Algemeen Nederlands Woordenboek knows neither sissy nor sissificatie |
The history of the word
From American English, and much earlier than you would think. Etymonline records the verb sissify in 1897, with the description “make (a male) effeminate or more effeminate”, and the noun sissification in 1915. That is half a century before the BDSM scene existed as a scene.
So the word was not coined in a playroom. It lay ready, and the scene picked it up. That also explains the form at once: -fy and -fication belong to verbs of transformation, as in purify and classify. The Dutch sissificatie is a direct loan translation of it, with the same suffix you find in identificatie and kwalificatie.
What there is not is a Dutch entry. The Algemeen Nederlands Woordenboek has no entry sissificatie, and no sissy either. That is no judgment on the concept, only an observation: this is scene language that Dutch has not yet taken in.
Why it is a program and not a scene
Because the suffix says so, and because that is how it works in practice.
A one-off evening with a dress and an agreed end is crossdressing within a scene. Sissification is what people mean when it carries on afterward: rules come with it, homework, a new name that also bears on the rest of the week, a form of address, and sometimes objects that stay on between the appointments. The encyclopedic description names the fixed components: a chastity belt that extends the humiliation by limiting access to the genitals, and the dressing-up itself as the core of the scenario.
That difference is not cosmetic. A scene has an ending built in; a program does not. Anyone who starts this without agreeing when it goes off again discovers within a few weeks that there is nothing left where it does not apply. That is exactly where this form goes wrong: not at the clothing, but at the missing ending.
What lies underneath it historically
Something old and not erotic. The same encyclopedia describes petticoating: putting a boy or man in girls’ clothes as humiliation or punishment, with role play around it that includes make-up, dolls, and handbags. There are indications that “petticoat punishment” was used as a means of upbringing, with credible accounts going back into the Victorian era.
The erotic form took over that template and laid consent under it. Anyone who knows the template therefore also recognizes its vulnerability: it is set up to humiliate, and that works just as well when it has not been agreed that it is play.
Why this falls within BDSM and not beside it
Because the arousal rarely comes alone.
That same Swedish study by Niklas Långström and Kenneth Zucker among 2,450 people also measures the population figure for arousal from clothing of the other sex. More interesting for this page is what they found alongside that figure: the strongest correlations were a positive attitude toward the practice itself and three other arousal patterns. Arousal from using pain, from showing your genitals to a stranger, and from spying on others during sex. They published it in Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy.
So anyone who sees something in this often also sees something in the rest of the spectrum. That explains why sissification almost never occurs on its own in practice but sits within a D/s relationship.
How common such preferences are is shown by the study of Klára Bártová and colleagues. They put questions about preference, arousal, fantasy, and behavior to a representative sample of 10,044 Czechs, and published in The Journal of Sex Research that 31.3% of the men and 13.6% of the women admitted at least one paraphilic preference. One detail is worth it here: with almost every paraphilia, men had actual experience more often than women, with two exceptions. Striking or inflicting pain, and humiliation or submission. Those are exactly the two this practice leans on.
Neither study measures sissification itself. What you can take from it is more modest than a percentage: this does not lie at the edge of what people do.
What sissification is not
“It’s about clothing.” No. The clothing is the tool; the subject is the power relationship and the timeline. Without rules and without duration you are left with crossdressing, and that is something else.
“Anyone who wants this is really trans.” That does not follow, and the question does not belong in a scene either. On forced feminization is why that reasoning does not hold scientifically.
“The heavier the humiliation, the better it works.” Also not. With a practice that carries on for months, the build-up is precisely the reason to go slowly: what is a stimulus on day one is a habit on day sixty, and the temptation to then pile more on top is the most common way this goes wrong.
What you can do yourself
- Agree on an end date, even if you plan to extend. A program without a horizon is no longer an agreement.
- Set down when it does not apply. With family, at work, during illness. Without that list it creeps into everything.
- Put the words on paper. Which names may be used and which may not is, with this practice, more important than which clothing is worn.
- Plan a moment each week where you talk out of role, not only when something is wrong.
- Stay off the body. Hormones without a doctor do not belong here, however often erotic stories bring them up.
Where this fits on this site
Sissification I do not offer: I work from the giving side, and here the man is the receiving party. What I can help with is the conversation about it. How you lead something like this without it happening to you. Such a preliminary conversation belongs with the BDSM date.
What I see myself
I am Victor, a gigolo, more than twenty-five years at home in BDSM and trained as a psychotherapist. What women ask me about this subject is rarely about clothing and almost always about direction. He proposed it, she does not know how you lead something you did not think up yourself, and the first weeks go well because it is new.
It gets heavier because it becomes routine, and no one has agreed where it stops. My experience is that the question “when does this go off again” feels awkward beforehand and afterward is the only thing that would have helped.

On this site, sissy explains where the role name comes from and why it keeps its sting, forced feminization describes the one-off scenario with the question of what “forced” does there, and degradation gives the mechanism this form runs on.
Beyond this site, the Czech study by Bártová and colleagues gives the best view of how common uncommon preferences turn out to be.

Frequently asked questions
What people still ask about sissification.
What is sissification?
Sissification is the long-term feminization of a man in clothing, posture, voice, and behavior, usually with humiliation as the means and with sissy as the role name. The suffix -fication says what it is about: a transformation that is built up. A one-off evening with a dress is not that.
What is the difference from forced feminization?
In practice the words are used interchangeably. Where they diverge is in the duration: forced feminization usually describes the scenario with a beginning and an end, sissification the ongoing program with rules, tasks, and a role name that also applies between the appointments. The one-off scenario is on the page about forced feminization.
How old is the word sissification?
Older than the scene. Etymonline records the English verb sissify in 1897, with the meaning “make (a male) effeminate or more effeminate”, and the noun sissification in 1915. The Dutch sissificatie is a loan translation of it. It is not in the Algemeen Nederlands Woordenboek.
Where does sissification usually go wrong?
At the missing ending. A scene has that built in, a program does not. What is a stimulus on day one is a habit after two months, and then the temptation to pile more on top is obvious. So agree on an end date and set down when it does not apply: with family, at work, during illness.
Who can you turn to with questions about sissification?
Victor, a gigolo with twenty-five years of experience in BDSM and a background as a psychotherapist. He does not offer this practice, he stands on the giving side, but he regularly speaks with women whose partner has brought it up and who do not know how you lead something like this.
