What is a Pro Dom?

Pro Dom, in full professional dominant, is someone who for pay fills the dominant role in an agreed session. The abbreviation stands for professional Dom and in Dutch usually refers to a man; the female counterpart is called a prodomme or dominatrix. What does and does not happen during such a session is fixed in advance.

What a Pro Dom does in practice

A Pro Dom builds and leads a scene someone else pays for, and guards his own limits just as strictly as the other person’s.

Most of the work sits before the appointment. A message comes in with a fantasy, a conversation follows about what does and does not happen, about health, about a safeword, and about how the aftercare runs. Only after that does an hour or two go into the calendar. A recognizable pattern: someone gets in touch with one sentence about what she wants, looks in the conversation for something quite different from what that sentence promised, and in the end the session bears little resemblance to the first email.

How the profession is regulated in the Netherlands

As work in the sex industry, with the municipality as the competent authority and a law that has been waiting years to take effect.

Paid work in prostitution is allowed here from age eighteen; that is stated on the central government’s information page. On top of that, article 151a of the Municipalities Act gives every municipal council the power to make an ordinance about “the commercial provision of opportunity to perform sexual acts with or for a third party against payment”. That little word for matters more here than with: a paid session in which no one has sex falls under it in principle. Whether your municipality has worked it out that way too is in the local ordinance and nowhere else.

The national successor has stalled for years. The bill Wet regulering sekswerk, which would introduce a licensing requirement for every sex worker, was tabled on 26 January 2021 and still sits with the House of Representatives; it takes effect only by royal decree. On 13 May 2026 the cabinet also announced it wants to raise the minimum age to twenty-one. This profession sits in a framework that moves.

Why people book a Pro Dom

Because with someone who does this for a living you can ask for something you would never say out loud in your own circle, without a relationship or a reputation hanging on it.

• For whoever books, it delivers expertise plus discretion: the fantasy has come by before, no one is startled, and the conversation is about the execution instead of about whether you are normal.
• For the Pro Dom himself, it is work, with a rate, a calendar, and bookkeeping. Not an extension of his private life.
• For a partner at home, it can give air when there is a desire that does not fit within the relationship. That only works if it is discussed; arranged in secret it costs more than it delivers.

Paying is not a quality mark. A rate says nothing about experience, safety knowledge, or aftercare, and a Pro Dom is not a care provider. Loss, coercion, or an old trauma belong with a therapist, not with a session.

How people find a Pro Dom

Almost always online, and almost always after weeks of reading along.

The usual order: first look around for a while, then search for the rates, only then write. The words people search for vary, from Pro Dom and dominant to gigolo and master. That the supply for women is so thin has a traceable reason: the encyclopedia notes that male professional dominants mostly serve the gay male market. Anyone in the Netherlands looking for a man who does this for women is left with a short list.

Misconceptions about Pro Doms

“A Pro Dom is the same as a dominatrix.” Almost, but not quite. Dominatrix is female only and in English carries its own imagery; Pro Dom only says that someone is paid for this.

“It’s sex by definition.” No, and with many Pro Doms it explicitly is not. What happens differs per person and is agreed in advance, not inferred from the word.

“Paid BDSM is a gray area or half illegal.” In the Netherlands this is legal work. The legislation is in motion, and elsewhere it plays out differently: Tamara O’Doherty and Kathleen Cherrington spoke with thirty-five Canadian professional dominants and describe in Archives of Sexual Behavior how Canadian law casts their services as criminal, which in their view increases vulnerability instead of protecting.

“A Pro Dom decides everything.” Only within what you have agreed. Whoever buys the lead does not buy away any say over herself.

What I see myself

I’m Victor, a gigolo, twenty-five years in BDSM and trained as a psychotherapist. In effect I am a Pro Dom who is also a gigolo, and that makes me an exception in the Netherlands: men who do this work for women can be counted here on one hand.

A large part of this trade lies outside the session. The overwhelming majority of my time goes to reading, writing back, and asking follow-up questions. The play itself is the shortest stretch of the day.

And the hardest skill is saying no to a request from someone who clearly needs something other than a scene. That is the mistake I see starting colleagues make most: taking everything on because it is asked for.

What you can do yourself

• Ask about experience, safeword, and aftercare before you fix anything. Whoever does this professionally has a ready answer; if he hesitates, you know enough.
• Read the Pro Dom’s limits before you send your wishes. Whoever writes down what he does not do sticks to it too.
• Describe one scene concretely instead of five vaguely. Detail makes a session better; volume only makes it longer.
• Agree the rate, duration, and cancellation in advance. This is work, and clear agreements belong to it.
• Look for help instead of a session when it’s about processing. A Pro Dom can carry an evening, not a history.
