What is mummification in BDSM? How full surrender, trust, and being wrapped completely still turn into deep, intense arousal.

Glossary
The only form of bondage where it is not the knot but the thermometer that decides how long it lasts.
Mummification is the form of bondage where the whole body is wrapped from the outside, so that almost no movement is left. Where rope holds at points, mummification seals off a surface. The restriction comes not from tension but from the layer around it.
| In the encyclopedia | a form of bondage that limits movement by wrapping someone in a casing |
| Forms it takes | cocooning with film or tape, a bodybag with a zip, a suit of latex, and a straitjacket as a partial form |
| Category | bondage, and within it the enveloping kind rather than the fixing kind |
| What sets the duration | the temperature, not the restriction |
| Biggest risk | overheating, because sealed material does not let sweat evaporate |
| What should be ready | blunt-tipped scissors, within reach of the person wrapping |
It takes away in one go what you normally do without thinking about it.
With rope you can still shift and work against it. With mummification that is gone: arms against the body, legs against each other, and breathing the only movement. What people describe afterward is rarely pain but almost always stillness.
A typical scene: someone lies in underwear on a mattress and is wrapped from the ankles up to the shoulders, head free. The first five minutes it feels almost cozy. After that it gets warm, and that is when the arrangement about the time has to do its work. Not to be made at that moment.
Because a wrapped body has nowhere to shed its heat.
Lindsey Koop and Prasanna Tadi name four routes by which a body gives off heat in the StatPearls chapter Physiology, Heat Loss: evaporation, convection, conduction and radiation. Evaporation always runs on, even without sweating, and is the only route left once the surroundings are warmer than the skin or when radiation and convection fall short. Above a skin temperature of 43 degrees it is the only route still left.
Film, tape and latex let no water vapor through and close off exactly that route, while the other three already do little on a mattress in a warm room. So the temperature climbs without anything going wrong and without you noticing it right away. That is why this is the form of bondage where a clock is more reliable than a feeling.
To find out what is left when there is nothing more to do.
The pull is in the completeness. With most forms of bondage there is still margin to wriggle or test; with mummification that margin is not there, and so surrender becomes a fact rather than a choice. For anyone who arranges a lot in daily life, that very impossibility is the point.
What it gives differs per person involved:
This is not a form for a first time, and not for anyone who gets short of breath quickly or has trouble with enclosed spaces.
Usually from the bottom up, in thin layers, with the head free.
Careful differs from sloppy on three points: head free and chest roomy, keeping track of the time instead of waiting it out, and the scissors in the same room.
With a suit or mask of latex one question is added. According to the StatPearls chapter Latex Allergy by Khoa Nguyen and Arpan Kohli, a latex allergy affects one to two percent of the population, and in occupational medicine latex is the most common cause of contact urticaria. You ask about that beforehand, not halfway.
“The danger is in not being able to move.” No, in the heat and in the breathing. Lying still does little; a chest that cannot expand and a body that can shed nothing does.
“If the head is free, nothing can go wrong.” A free head solves the breathing, not the temperature, and that rise is exactly what you feel only late.
“Mummification is the most dangerous form of BDSM.” That picture does not hold up. Where BDSM has gone seriously wrong in the past, it almost always involved breath restriction combined with drink or drugs, and not the wrapping itself. That does not make mummification casual, but it does put the care in the right place: at the face and at staying sober.
“Tighter is more intense.” Tighter is mostly warmer and more stifling. The intensity comes from the completeness and from the time.

The question almost always comes from people who know the picture and not the temperature. They expect stuffiness and get warmth. A very different experience from the one they had prepared for.
And getting out is the part that stays with you. Layer by layer back, with the room air coming onto the skin again: there is more emotion in that than in the wrapping, and so more time should be set aside for it too.
Within this glossary, cocooning is about the film variant, bodybag describes the ready-made bag, and bondage holds the broader frame with the two-finger rule. On the blog, what is mummification tells how such a scene feels from the inside.
Beyond this site, the StatPearls chapter Physiology, Heat Loss explains why a sealed layer makes such a difference.
If you want to experience bondage without organizing it yourself, that starts with a conversation about how far it goes and how long. The page on the BDSM date shows what comes up in it. Full wrapping is not a standard part of it.
Mummification is the overarching term; below are the pages about one material or execution.
Frequently asked questions
Mummification is the form of bondage where the whole body is wrapped from the outside, so that almost no movement is left. Where rope holds at points, mummification seals off a surface. Film, tape, a bag with a zip or a suit of latex all do the same work.
Shorter than most people think, and the clock decides that, not the feeling. Film, tape and latex let no water vapor through, while evaporation is exactly the route by which a body sheds heat once the surroundings are warmer than the skin. The temperature climbs because of that without being felt right away, so agree a time beforehand and set an alarm on it.
The risks with mummification are in the heat and in the breathing, not in lying still itself. So leave the head free, check at every layer that the chest can expand freely, and put blunt-tipped scissors in the same room before you begin. Someone who is fully wrapped is never left alone.
