What is a keyholder?

Keyholder is the person who keeps the key to a chastity lock and thereby decides when the wearer may come out again. The role usually sits with the dominant party, but that is an agreement, not a law.

What a keyholder decides

One thing, and that one thing is enough.

The encyclopedia puts it plainly: whoever does not have the key generally cannot get the device off by themselves. The whole role hangs on that. The dictionary also counts the broader decision under the BDSM meaning: the keyholder determines whether the other gets any stimulation or an orgasm at all.

Why people appoint a keyholder

Because a decision you cannot reverse yourself feels different from an intention.

For the one wearing it, the decision moves to someone else, and you notice that most on the moments when nothing else is happening at all: in line at the register, halfway through a meeting. Whoever gets the key discovers the mirror image of that. Presence is not needed. So the role can be filled at a distance too, though it only works if there is an agreed end to it. A key that never appears is no longer a game, only a lock.

What the role asks of you

Being reachable, and that is less noncommittal than it sounds.

In American Journal of Men’s Health, Campbell and colleagues call strangulation of the penis a rare urological emergency: an object stuck around it blocks the blood and lymph drainage, which leads to inflammation, swelling and eventually tissue death. They collected a hundred cases from fifty-six studies over the years 2000 to 2019. Metal rings accounted for 36 percent of those cases, half were attributed to sexual activity, and twenty-four of the hundred were left with complaints.

That is not all about chastity locks, but the mechanism is the same and the key is the only difference. The encyclopedia names a case from 2008 in which a man had to be cut out of a titanium device after the keys were lost. So make sure a spare key is within the wearer’s reach, and agree on how you can be reached if something comes up.

During a BDSM date I take over the orgasm control: when you may go further and when you wait, I decide then. Being a keyholder over weeks, with a lock that stays on in between, is not part of that. That is something for someone who is there every day.
