Professional cuddling is cuddling by appointment, clothes on and nothing sexual about it. Here is how it works, and who it is for.

Glossary
A group, everyday clothes, and nothing sexual: practicing touch and saying no, under clear rules.
A cuddle party (Dutch: knuffelfeest) is a facilitated group event around non-sexual touch, where people in everyday clothes practice cuddling, holding, and closeness under clear consent rules. The concept was devised in 2004 by Reid Mihalko and Marcia Baczynski. Nothing sexual happens; it is about touch and about learning to say no.
| Dutch term | knuffelfeest; the everyday word next to the loanword cuddle party |
| Also known as | cuddle event, cuddle gathering |
| Category | group event around touch; an answer to skin hunger |
| Not to be confused with | cuddle therapy: that is one-on-one, not in a group |
| Created by | Reid Mihalko and Marcia Baczynski, 2004 |
| Main point | nothing sexual, clothes on, and consent is the core rule |
A cuddle party does not begin with cuddling but with talking. According to the encyclopedic description, a cuddle party opens with a welcome circle where the rules are gone over: always ask before you touch someone, a no is never a problem, and your clothes stay on. Only then comes the free part, where people may hold each other or simply lie side by side. A facilitator keeps an eye on the mood and the agreements. It is exactly those rules that make it safe enough to relax.
The draw is touch without anything behind it. For anyone who is touched little but has no appetite for sex or romance, a cuddle party fills exactly that gap. It is also a safe place to practice asking and saying no, something many people were never taught. That touch does you good is well supported: the meta-analysis by Packheiser and colleagues found across 137 studies that touch measurably reduces stress, pain, and low mood. Still, a cuddle party is a group, and for some people that is precisely the hurdle. Anyone who only feels safe with one trusted person is better served by a calm one-on-one setting.
A cuddle party is a group, and that is not everyone’s favorite way to be touched. If you would rather be held one-on-one, at your own pace and without a group around you, the page about cuddle therapy explains how such a session works with me. Clothes on, nothing sexual, and you decide how close it gets.
