Glossary
The Dutch club where couples and singles go out together and, if they want, have sex on the spot.
A couples club is a venue where couples and singles meet and can have sex with each other on the spot. Sex is part of it but not required. In Dutch it is called a parenclub, from paren, meaning couples, because the club is meant first of all for pairs. It is often called a swingers club too.
| Also known as | a swingers club, often the same place in Dutch practice; a sex club is the broader name for this kind of venue |
| Category | a place to swing and for group sex |
| Not to be confused with | a brothel, because there you have sex with sex workers and not with other visitors |
| For whom | couples and singles, all ages; you pay entry and sometimes membership |
| Main risk | STIs, and assumptions about what the other person wants; the house rules don’t settle that last part on their own |
An evening at a couples club rarely starts with sex. You come in, pay entry, and the first hours look like any other night out: a drink, dancing, talking with whoever you run into at the bar. Only when there’s a click does it shift to the rooms in the back.
Take a couple going for the first time on a beginners’ night. They keep their towel with them, stay at the edge watching for a while, and agree beforehand that they’ll only watch that evening. Halfway through they get talking with another couple. In the end nothing more happens than a conversation and a look into the play room, and they drive home content. That is an ordinary first time, and not the exceptional scenario people have in their heads beforehand.
According to the Dutch description, a couples club is a venue where couples meet and can perform sexual acts. Sex is an important part of the visit, but not required. The club separates the social space from the play space: a bar and a dance floor up front, separate rooms and often a sauna or jacuzzi in the back, with strict hygiene requirements.
There are house rules, and they differ per club. What holds almost everywhere is that prostitution is absolutely not allowed: you pay for the entry and the drinks, not for sex. Clubs often run theme nights, such as nights for beginners, for bi contact, for fetish and BDSM, or for men only. A theme like that decides who comes that evening and what atmosphere you find.
The pull sits in doing something together that isn’t possible at home. Watching and being watched. Meeting new people in a place openly meant for it, without having to seduce someone who has no idea.
For a couple, a couples club is a way to swing together and make it a shared experience instead of a secret. For a woman who goes alone it is a defined, relatively safe entry point: there are people at the door, there are rules, and you don’t have to do anything. A Dutch study among swingers also shows that the crowd is older than many people think, with an average age around 43 to 46. So it is not a youthful party scene.
What a couples club does not solve is the conversation you haven’t had with your partner yet. The place makes nothing easier when one of you actually has doubts and the other pushes through. The sting sits more often in that unspoken part than in the club itself.
Usually you first pick an evening that suits you, for example a beginners’ night rather than a busy single-men party. You read the house rules beforehand, because every club has its own agreements about touching, condoms and how a no is respected. On arrival you often change, with a towel as standard kit. And you talk: most contacts begin at the bar and not in the play room. A couple agrees between themselves how far they want to go that evening, from watching only to soft swap or full swap.
“Couples club and swingers club are two different things.” In practice they blur together. Couples club stresses the pairs who come, swingers club the partner swapping, but the same venue often carries both names.
“A couples club is a fancy brothel.” No. In a brothel you have sex with sex workers; in a couples club with other visitors, and paid sex is in fact forbidden there. That is the sharpest difference from a sex club in the sense of a red-light zone or private house.
“You have to join in there.” Sex is not required. Many visitors only watch, talk, or head home again after a night of dancing. The towel is not a contract.
I’m Victor, a gigolo, active for twenty-five years and trained as a psychotherapist, and I work a lot with couples. The question that almost always comes back with a couples club is not “how far do we go”, but “what if I’m standing there and don’t want anything”. That’s a good question, and the answer is simple: then you do nothing.
The couples for whom it goes well have already talked at home about what a no means, even when it comes in the middle of the evening. The couples for whom it goes wrong skipped that because it seemed more exciting to see what happens. That second route rarely brings you anywhere you wanted to be.
On this site, the page on swinging explains what the practice itself is, and the page on the sex club how such a venue relates to other places. For a concrete picture of an evening there is the blog visiting a couples club as a woman, with a gigolo along.
Beyond this site, the Dutch encyclopedia gives the plain basic description, and the study by Kampman and colleagues shows who actually comes and why STI testing matters in this world.
A couples club is a place, not a service I provide. If you want to explore a world like that but would rather not stand at the door on your own, it can help to bring someone who is calm about it. What I do with couples and with women you can read at my services for couples. You can ask a question with no obligation first, that doesn’t commit you to anything.
Frequently asked questions
A couples club is a venue where couples and singles meet and can have sex with each other on the spot. Sex is part of it but not required. The Dutch name, parenclub, comes from paren, meaning couples.
In Dutch practice there is barely any difference, and the same location often carries both names. The word couples club stresses the couples who meet there; swingers club stresses the partner swapping. The atmosphere and the house rules decide more than the name on the door.
No, sex at a couples club is not required. Plenty of guests only watch, talk at the bar, or head home after an evening of dancing. You decide for yourself whether, and how far, you join in.
Yes, a woman can go to a couples club alone, and on most singles’ nights women are especially welcome. Read the house rules beforehand, because they differ per club. Research shows the crowd is older than often thought, on average around 43 to 46.
