Chastity belt

The most famous object from the Middle Ages that did not exist in the Middle Ages.

What is a chastity belt?

A chastity belt is a locking garment made of hard material that closes around the waist and runs between the legs, so the genitals are out of reach. Someone else holds the key. Touching yourself and coming are no longer your own decision, they are things you need permission for.

Where does the chastity belt come from?

Not from the Middle Ages. That is the first thing to know about this object.

The word itself is old. The Etymologiebank records gordel in 1240, meaning “belt, band around the waist”, derived from the verb gorden and related to the Old English gyrdel, which still exists as girdle. So a gordel was simply a belt.

The belt with a lock on it is another story. The Dutch-language encyclopedia names 1405 as the oldest known image, in Bellifortis by Konrad Kyeser, a book on military engineering. The thing sat there among other fantasy objects meant as a joke. A gag, then, not a household item.

And the specimens behind museum glass? Read what the curators write about them themselves. Next to the iron belt with object number A641274 in the Science Museum Group collection it says without any fuss: “recent arguments suggest they are nothing more than Victorian myths”, and about this piece, that the documentation dates it to the sixteenth century but it probably comes from the 1800s. Even the padlock is not the original.

Why do people wear a chastity belt?

People wear one for the reason it always comes down to with chastity: something is waiting. A belt makes an agreement tangible and inescapable, even on a Tuesday morning with nothing else planned. That same encyclopedia notes that belts today are worn mostly inside a BDSM relationship and by both sexes, not by women alone the way the cliché has it.

A belt does nothing that an agreement doesn’t already do. If you can’t last a week without a device, you won’t last it with one either, and you end up with a raw spot on top.

What should you watch for with a chastity belt?

With a belt the skin is the problem, not the lock. Whatever presses against it for days on end traps heat and moisture. Thuisarts.nl describes that mechanism with chafing rashes: they form where two pieces of skin sit against each other, from moisture and heat, and friction from tight clothing feeds into it. The advice is as dull as it is useful. Keep it dry, wear light cotton, and see a doctor if it hasn’t eased after a few days.

A belt that stays on longer than an evening should be custom-made, the encyclopedia writes, because every body is different. And keep a spare key within the wearer’s reach.

Where this fits on this site

I don’t own a chastity belt and I don’t work with one. What I am about is the feeling underneath it: not deciding for yourself when you come. If you want to know what that looks like inside a single evening, the BDSM date walks you through how I build one.

  • gordel. Etymologiebank, hosted by the Instituut voor de Nederlandse Taal, with the entry from the Etymologisch Woordenboek van het Nederlands (Philippa et al., 2003-2009). Gives the Middle Dutch form gordel “belt, band around the waist” from 1240 (Bern.), the derivation from the verb gorden with the suffix -el, the Proto-Germanic form *gurd-ila-, and the cognates Old High German gurtel, Old Frisian gerdel, Old English gyrdel (English girdle) and Old Norse gyrđill.
  • Iron chastity belt, Europe, 1501-1600. Science Museum Group Collection, object number A641274. A national museum group’s catalog for a piece in its own collection. Gives the sentence “It is thought chastity belts were invented in the Middle Ages to prevent women having sexual intercourse. However, recent arguments suggest they are nothing more than Victorian myths”, the statement “Documentation connected with this object claims it may date from the 1500s, but more likely it was made in the 1800s”, and the note that the accompanying padlock is not the original.
  • Kuisheidsgordel. Dutch-language Wikipedia. Gives the description as “een met een slot beveiligd kledingstuk van onbreekbaar materiaal, veelal metaal, dat direct op de huid als een soort tweede onderbroek gedragen wordt”, the oldest known image from 1405 in Bellifortis by Konrad Kyeser among fantasy objects meant as a joke, the point that belts today are worn mostly inside a BDSM relationship and by both sexes, and the rule that a belt worn for a long stretch at a time has to be custom-made.
  • Ik heb smetplekken. Thuisarts.nl, from the Nederlands Huisartsen Genootschap together with the Federatie Medisch Specialisten and Patiëntenfederatie Nederland. Gives that chafing rashes sit where two pieces of skin rest against each other, that moisture and heat in skin folds are the cause with friction from tight clothing as a contributing factor, the advice to keep dry, wear light cotton clothing and go easy on soap, and the advice to see a GP if the spots stay despite those measures.

A chastity belt is a tool within chastity, and that is the page with the wider story, including the form that works with no device at all.

  • Chastity cage. The small model that only closes around the penis, and gets worn far more often than the belt.
  • CB. The abbreviation this object goes by on profiles, and why it gets mixed up with CBT.
  • Keyholder. The one who keeps the key, and what that role asks.
