Far, and that shapes the form

Stuttgart is almost six hours’ drive from Amsterdam, Freiburg a little more. Mannheim and Karlsruhe sit better, around five hours. Either way, this is not a state for a short evening. Here we plan a night, two days or a weekend, and then the drive falls away completely against the time we have together.

For many women that’s the appeal, actually. This far from your ordinary life there’s no one who sees anything, nothing tugging at you, and no schedule starting tomorrow morning.

Four cities, four characters

Stuttgart lies in a bowl between the vineyard slopes, which gives the city an oddly intimate feel for its size. Mannheim is laid out like a chessboard, with numbered blocks instead of street names, and has a lively student population. Karlsruhe fans out from the palace like an open hand. And Freiburg im Breisgau is the sunniest city in Germany, with the Bächle running through the streets and the Black Forest at its edge.

Anyone weighing a stay of a few days is in the right place here. The Kaiserstuhl, Lake Constance, Alsace just across the Rhine. All within an hour or two.

Language

German, English or Dutch, and switching is fine. The Swabian dialect can be tough going, but that’s true for Germans from Hamburg just as much. In conversation with me it’s plain standard German.

What applies in practice

Five to a good six hours’ driving, depending on the city. What that means in travel costs you hear before there’s a date, and after that the amount doesn’t change anymore.

There’s no surcharge for the night, the weekend or a public holiday, and booking together costs the same as alone. For a stay of several days I ask for a deposit, because by then I’ve already reserved accommodation.

Where we meet

Almost always a hotel. The supply is good, also outside the four big cities, and nothing is made of it if you stay one or two nights. For most women that’s more comfortable than home.

Home is fine too, exactly as in the Netherlands. Then we agree beforehand how I arrive and where I park. In a village in the Black Forest I’m as careful about that as in a village in the Achterhoek.

Who I come here for

For women who are married and have missed for years what they don’t say aloud. Also for women starting over after a divorce. For widows, in whom sorrow and longing exist side by side, which is more normal than it feels. Just as much for women who are here for work and know no one.

For a stay of two days or longer I ask for a deposit, simply because by then I’ve booked a hotel or holiday home myself.

Doubts I often hear

“Six hours of driving for me alone?” Yes. That’s my work, and the travel time is already built into the date. You don’t have to feel guilty about it.

“Surely this isn’t for someone like me?” Almost everyone thinks that beforehand. In practice they’re teachers, nurses, business owners. People with a mortgage and a full week.

“And if there’s no click?” You almost always notice that in the messages beforehand. Then we plan nothing, and it has cost you a few texts.
