What are restraints?
Restraints are cuffs that close around the wrists or ankles, made of leather, rubber, steel, or nylon. They limit movement and make the role division visible. For most people they are the first piece of bondage gear they buy, because they go on and off faster than rope.

Why the material makes the difference
A cuff does the same thing as a length of rope, but spreads the pressure differently. A wide leather cuff spreads the force over a couple of centimeters; a steel handcuff puts that same force on a narrow edge.
What you watch for
The two-finger rule applies here too: two fingers should fit between the cuff and the skin. Check as well that the hands stay warm and that someone can still move their fingers; tingling is a late signal, not an early one.
Practical: for a first time choose leather or nylon, with steel always keep two keys in two places, and switch on the double lock if your cuffs have it. And the basic rule from the encyclopedia: never leave someone who is tied up alone, and keep scissors or a key within reach.
