Door cuffs

The one piece of bondage gear you can use in a rented home without a single screw in the wall.

What are door cuffs?

Door cuffs (Dutch: deurboeien; in English also over-the-door restraints or a door restraint system) are wrist cuffs and ankle cuffs on straps with a small block at the end. That block goes over the top of the door or through the gap, and as soon as the door is closed it wedges on the other side. The door becomes the anchor point this way.

Dutch termdeurboeien. In English over-the-door restraints, also door restraint system and doorjamb cuffs. No established Dutch trade name.
Also known asdoor bondage set; related to ordinary restraints with a carabiner
What it consists oftwo to four cuffs, adjustable straps, and per strap a block or roller of plastic, foam, or wood
What it attaches tothe door leaf itself, not the wall and not the frame
What it replacesa St Andrew’s cross or an eyebolt in the ceiling

How door cuffs work

The wedge does the work, not the knot. Each block is wider than the gap between door and frame, so as soon as the door latches the strap can no longer pass through. Pulling only makes it firmer, because the direction of the pull presses the block against the door leaf.

You set the height by laying the strap over the top (arms up) or sliding it into the bottom of the gap (ankles apart). Four at once gives the familiar X position, standing against the door leaf.

Two things decide whether it works in your home. The door has to be able to stay closed, so a door you still need to get out of the room is the wrong one. And the hinge is on one side: on the hinge side the gap is narrower and most blocks hold less well than on the latch side.

Why people use door cuffs

Because nothing about the house changes. No drill, no anchor point in the ceiling, no piece of furniture standing in the living room explaining what you do at home. Afterward the whole thing goes in a drawer.

For the one being restrained, the gain is that the position is standing and that there is something hard behind your back, which feels different from being restrained lying down. For the one doing the restraining, the gain is speed: putting on a set takes half a minute. Do you want to be tied up without having to install anything at home? Then I bring that along on a bdsm date.

Door cuffs give exactly one position, standing at door width, and there are no settings beyond high or low. For someone who wants something to hang, kneel, or lie in, this is the wrong tool and a bench or a cross is the intended solution.

That is not a matter of taste but a structural requirement. Ordinary cuffs are not made to carry any significant weight; there is a separate type for that, the suspension cuff, which is rated for body weight. A door is not a suspension point, and door cuffs keep someone in place, they do not hold them up.

  • Bondage cuffs. English-language Wikipedia, accessed 11 August 2026. Provides the construction of cuffs as wide wrist and ankle bands, usually of leather and often lined, closed with a lock, a buckle, or Velcro, and the point that they go around the wrist or ankle and are then “attached to each other or another object”, which is exactly what a door does here. It also provides the D-rings and straps used for that attaching, the warning that these cuffs too can cause serious injury with wrong or unsupervised use, and the point that ordinary cuffs are not designed to carry any significant load, for which the separate suspension cuffs exist. The entry is a short stub and is used here only for those generally accepted points.
  • Restraints. The part that goes around the wrist; door cuffs are cuffs plus a wedging system.
  • Bondage. The overarching term for restraint, of which door cuffs are the most living-room-friendly form.
  • St Andrew’s cross. The play furniture that door cuffs imitate, with many more positions.
  • Bench. The lying-down counterpart, for those who cannot hold the standing position.
  • Ankle cuffs. The lower half of a set of door cuffs, also sold separately.
  • Spreader bar. The other way to spread without furniture.

Frequently asked questions

What people still ask about door cuffs.

  1. What are door cuffs?

Door cuffs are wrist and ankle cuffs on straps with a small block at the end that wedges behind a closed door. In English they are called over-the-door restraints. The door becomes the anchor point that way, so you need no play furniture and no drill.

  2. Do door cuffs work on every door?

Every door that can stay closed. The block has to be wider than the gap between door and frame, and it holds better on the latch side than on the hinge side, where the gap is narrower. A door you still need to get out of the room is the wrong choice for door cuffs.

  3. What can you do with door cuffs?

Standing restraint, in one position. Four straps at once give the X position against the door leaf; two straps along the top raise only the wrists. There are no settings beyond high or low, so for kneeling, hanging, or lying down door cuffs are not the right tool.

  4. Who can you turn to with questions about door cuffs?

Victor, a gigolo with twenty-five years of experience in BDSM and a background as a psychotherapist. Bondage he does light or firm, by agreement, and about gear that does not stand out at home he is happy to talk. You can ask him a question with no obligation through the contact form or first chat for free.
