Needle play

What is needle play?

Needle play is the agreed, shallow piercing of the skin with sterile needles, which are removed again at the end of the scene. Nothing is left in the skin. Needle play falls under bloodplay and, in the Dutch scene, is counted as edgeplay.

How a needle play scene goes

Slowly, and with much more preparation than play.

A usual course: the spot is chosen on a piece of skin that lifts loosely, usually the upper arm, the chest or the back. The skin is disinfected, the hands go into gloves, and the needles lie ready still unopened. Then the first goes in, and after that one at a time, with a pause in between where nothing happens but breathing. The person receiving lies or sits; standing needle play invites a faint. At the end the needles come out in reverse order, gauze goes on the dots of blood that remain, and everything disappears into a sharps container.

The build-up is the play. With needle play the tension lies largely in the seconds before the prick, not in the prick itself, and that makes pace the most important instrument the giving party has.

Why the skin reacts the way it does

Because the layer that reports pain and the layer that bleeds are not the same layer.

Wilfredo Lopez-Ojeda and colleagues describe in the StatPearls chapter on the anatomy of the skin that the free nerve endings which respond to pain, light touch and temperature lie in the epidermis. The blood supply comes from plexuses between the papillary and reticular layers of the dermis, so deeper. A needle that stays just under the epidermis passes the tissue that reports most and barely the tissue that bleeds most. That is why needle play feels sharp and yet gives little blood, and at once why piercing deeper is a different game.

Why people do needle play

For a kind of pain that exists nowhere else in the body: small in area, exactly placeable, and dosable one at a time.

The taste is not rare. Jennifer Eve Rehor surveyed 1,580 women from the kink community about more than 126 behaviors for her study in Archives of Sexual Behavior. Of them, 50.70 percent had taken part in temporary needle, pin or injection work in some form, and 26.46 percent had undergone it themselves. For comparison: bloodplay as a whole stands at 36.58 percent in the same table.

What it gives differs by role. The person receiving usually describes a narrow, clear kind of concentration: there is one point and nothing else, and that quiets the head in a way that heavier pain does not. The person giving gets something else back, namely the slowing down. Needle play forces precision, and that precision is the appeal for many tops.

Needle play makes nothing right. Anyone who faints at a blood draw or who is only nervous the first time does not end up here in a good state but in a medical incident, and that does not change with practice or with a better atmosphere.

What needle play is not, legally

Needle play is not piercing in the Netherlands.

The Commodities Act Decree on tattooing and piercing defines piercing as perforating the skin, mucous membranes, cartilage or muscle tissue so that it becomes possible to leave a piercing in the perforation, and a piercing, by that same article, is jewelry that stays in that perforation. With needle play nothing is left behind, and there is no business using material for it. The decree obliges such a business to hold a license and to work without danger to health; the hygiene guidelines of the National Center for Hygiene and Safety are included in the Commodities Act for that, and the GGD inspects on them.

The consequence is not that needle play is banned. The consequence is that no one is watching. Everything a piercing studio is checked on has to come from the people themselves with needle play.

What I see of it

I’m Victor, a gigolo, twenty-five years in BDSM and trained as a psychotherapist. Needles are on my list of possibilities, with the note that it is a charged subject.

Almost no one asks about the pain. The question is nearly always about the blood, or about whether anything visible is left. That is a good question to ask, because the answer decides whether someone can go quietly to work the next day. The second question that always comes is about fainting, and it is fair: that happens to people who have nothing wrong with them, simply because the body reacts to the sight of a needle before anything has happened.

What you arrange before the first needle goes in

• Agree how many needles go in at most, and hold to that number even when it feels good.
• Have the person receiving lie down, not stand or sit, so a faint does not become a fall.
• Buy needles in a sealed sterile package, use them once, on one person, and throw them straight into a sharps container.
• Ask beforehand about hepatitis B vaccination and agree what you do if someone pricks themselves by accident on a used needle, including which number you then call.
• Start with one needle on a day when nothing else is on, and only then judge whether there is a second time.
• Do no needle play on a spot where you cannot lift the skin loosely, and stay away from joints and from large blood vessels.
