What is human furniture?

Human furniture is furniture in which a human body takes on the function of a table, chair, cabinet, footstool or tray. In some cases a sculpture of a human body is used instead of a living person. Human furniture is the piece of furniture; forniphilia is the name of the preference for it.

Where the image comes from

Out of art, and it keeps coming back there. The encyclopedia notes that human furniture can also be a sculpture of a body rather than a person. Such a sculpture regularly causes trouble: the Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard made a chair in the shape of a black woman, and when art collector Dasha Zhukova had herself photographed sitting on it in 2014, a row broke out and she apologized.

On screen the tableau has almost become a cliché. Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange from 1971 puts a gang in a bar full of tables in the shape of naked women, and in 2021 Squid Game surrounded its anonymous VIPs with painted bodies. That immediately explains why the English word is broader than the Dutch one. Human furniture covers both the scene between two people and the image of it in a museum or a film, while forniphilia is only about the preference.

Why people find human furniture arousing

Because a piece of furniture has no opinion. Whoever gets the role only has to stay; whoever uses it may act as though nothing is there. That looking-away is the charge, not the posture itself. For a couple it’s also one of the few forms in which nothing has to happen for something to happen.

Time is the problem here. Kneeling seems harmless, but the prepatellar bursa is, according to StatPearls, the bursa that gets inflamed most often from repeated kneeling, and the recommended measure is simple: avoid kneeling or put something thicker underneath. A cushion under the knees does more than a shorter hour.
