Where the word comes from
A gigolo is by definition a man who is paid for his attention. The encyclopedia describes a gigolo briefly as a male escort hired by a woman for sex or company. The word is young. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, gigolo surfaced in English in 1922, borrowed from the French gigolo, the masculine counterpart of gigole, a dancer. The original sense was a paid dance partner, or a young man kept financially by an older woman in return for his attention.
