BDSM for women: how needle play, surrender, and body awareness bring you closer to yourself. Safe, with consent and RACK.

Glossary
A word that means something completely different in two worlds, and in the scene it points to the heaviest corner.
Bloodsports is the English umbrella term within BDSM for play that draws blood, from a single cut to extensive scarification. It falls under edgeplay. Outside the scene the word means something else entirely, namely hunting and animal fighting, and that double meaning is why you rarely hear it in Dutch conversations.
| Dutch term | bloedspel; the most common label in Dutch conversations |
| Also known as | bloodplay, the more neutral English variant |
| What it covers | cutting, needle play, blood cupping, scarification |
| Category | edgeplay: the heaviest corner of the BDSM spectrum |
| False friend | in everyday English, bloodsports means hunting and animal fighting |
The three names cover the same thing but sound different, and that is exactly why they sit side by side. Bloodsports is the heaviest word: it stresses the edge this play sits on. Bloodplay is more neutral and gets used most in English-speaking communities. The Dutch term bloedspel is the one that comes up most in conversations here.
For the practice itself the name makes no difference. What does matter is that the word bloodsports means hunting outside this context, which causes confusion in search results and conversations.
The main danger of bloodsports is not the act but what gets exchanged between two bodies. The risk profile is identical to that of bloodplay, and it is described there in more detail.
Xu and colleagues, writing in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, reviewed 308 reported adverse events and concluded that infection is the main complication of needles in the skin, and that since disposable needles were introduced hepatitis infections are rarely reported anymore. So sterile, single-use material is not a recommendation but the heart of the story. When I do this on a BDSM date, for me it begins and ends right there.
