A park worth the journey

The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is the largest hillside park in Europe and is on the World Heritage list. At the top of the hill stands a giant statue of Hercules, and on summer Wednesdays and Sundays the water display is switched on: the water pours from top to bottom through cascades and grottoes down to the fountain by the palace. Thousands of people stand watching and yet it is quiet.

For an afternoon together that is one of the finest things Germany has to offer.

Practical and distance

From Amsterdam, Kassel is about four and a half hours’ drive. That is too far for a short evening and fine for a night or two days. Plan a few weeks ahead.

Travel costs match the distance and you know them beforehand, before anything is fixed. Nothing is added later. No surcharges for the evening, the night, the weekend or a public holiday, and booking as a pair costs no extra.

What else we can do

The documenta city has plenty of art in public space even outside the exhibition year. The Karlsaue, a park along the Fulda with the Orangerie. And the Grimmwelt, about the Grimm brothers who gathered their fairy tales here.

Around the city lies the Reinhardswald, the forest where Sleeping Beauty is said to have slept, with beeches that look older than seems reasonable.

Language

German, English or Dutch. In northern Hesse German is handiest, and I speak it fine.

Who I come here for

For women who are married and have long been waiting for a touch with attention in it. For women who, after a divorce, plan a few days for themselves, far from anyone who asks questions.

Widows, in whom the body recovers faster than the head allows. And many women from the villages around Kassel, where people know one another and things like this are not discussed.

Discretion

I park where you want, even if that is some way off. No flowers, no loud greeting on the doorstep, and a story ready should anyone ask who I am. In the smaller places around Kassel I pay extra attention to that.

I work alone: no agency, no go-between, and your name ends up in no system.

Changing your mind is allowed

On the way too, and even if a weekend was already blocked out for it. That is no failure, and on my side there is no objection.

In practice it regularly goes differently from planned. Sometimes calmer, sometimes not. The outcome interests me less than whether you are happy with it.

If you are still hesitating

Writing commits you to nothing. Some women email me with one question about how it works and leave it at that. Some come back a year later.

I do not chase it, and nothing has to come of it.

What it is not

There is no organisation behind me: no catalogue, no go-between, no file where your name stays. From the first line you are writing to the one who comes later.

And it is not a performance. Your body does not have to look like anything, your age is no obstacle, and what you want you do not have to defend here.

Where we meet

Usually in a hotel. Neutral ground, no neighbours, no house that has to be tidied first, and a door that locks. For a longer stay an apartment or holiday home is often nicer still: your own entrance and no reception desk to pass.

Home is of course possible too, provided you feel at ease there. That is the only criterion that counts. We then arrange in advance how I arrive and where I park.

What women often say afterward

It almost never starts with what happened in bed. What comes up more often is the calm: that no one was watching a clock, that a question about how it really went was not meant as a step toward something else.

And after that, almost always, the sigh that they took far too long to write.
