Alias Tom: book review of an honest gigolo memoir
Book review of 'Alias Tom': an honest gigolo memoir about desire and connection, and what it teaches you.

A good book can turn your whole view of intimacy on its head. It puts a finger on something you have felt for years without ever having words for it. And then, somewhere on page one hundred forty: so that is what it is called. So I am not the only one. A book opens doors you never walked past yourself, simply because you did not know they were there.
I love reading about desire. About sex, about what pulls people toward each other and sometimes drives them apart. Novels, of course, and plenty of them have stayed with me. Honest non-fiction too, written by therapists and researchers who spent years listening to exactly these questions. Those two kinds of book together give a picture that is surprisingly complete. The novel lets you feel it, the non-fiction explains why you feel it.
So what does an evening with a good book about sex and intimacy actually give you? First of all, recognition. There is something disarming about reading a total stranger write down your exact doubt, as if they had been sitting at your kitchen table last week. That recognition takes the shame off. And once the shame is gone, there is room left. Room to get curious instead of scared.
A book also gives you language. Once you can name a desire, you can share it with a partner. Or, if that still feels too soon, you can face it with yourself first. Sounds small. It is not. I know people for whom a single chapter opened up a conversation their relationship had avoided for years, only because there were finally words for it.
Reading tips on desire work best when you do not treat them as homework. Read a passage, put the book down, let it sit. Notice what stays in your head the next day. That is usually the exact part you need to do something with.
Here I share the books about intimacy and desire that moved me. What you get from them, and who they work best for. And above all why a book like that sometimes stirs up more than a whole conversation would.
Would you rather have a complete overview than a story per book? My booklist gathers almost a hundred titles in one place, from practical handbooks to the classics of erotic literature, with a filter by type, language, and theme.
By Victor, gigolo in Amsterdam.
Did you recognize something above, but you do not dare say it out loud yet to someone close to you? It does not have to be right away. A book is a good start, a conversation with me is another kind of start. No pressure, no obligations: send me a message and we will look calmly at where your desire wants to go. If you would rather read first about what is possible, take a look at intimate togetherness, or go straight to the page to book me as a gigolo.
