What Is Spanking?

What spanking is, pain and pleasure in BDSM

What Is Spanking?

What is spanking? Put simply: a smack on the backside, with the hand, a paddle, a belt, whatever you enjoy. But anyone who has felt it knows the real question is a different one. Why does a smack on your skin feel like pain one second and pure pleasure the next? That is where the real story lives.

I get this question a lot. Women who are curious but a little embarrassed to say it out loud. You don’t need to be. There is nothing strange about wanting spanking. It is one of the oldest forms of play between people who trust each other.

What spanking actually is

Spanking explained in one sentence: giving smacks or slaps to the backside, usually in a sexual or erotic setting, with arousal, connection, or surrender as the goal. If the person receiving it leans forward over a spanking bench, what changes is mostly the position, not the act itself. That is the definition on paper. The experience is far richer than that.

Some love the bare hand, direct, skin on skin, nothing in between. Others pick a paddle for the sound and the broader, duller warmth it gives. Someone else wants a leather belt, with that weight and that threat that never gets paid out unless the two of you agree it will. There is no single right way. There is only what suits you, and you get to try it out.

Why pain turns into pleasure here

Your body doesn’t draw a sharp line between unpleasant and good the way your head does. A smack sets off nerve pathways that lie close together: pain and touch, alarm and arousal. Endorphins release, your heart rate climbs, and when there is trust, your body translates that jolt into something warm instead of something threatening.

There is something about power at play too. Whoever gives the smack takes the lead for a moment. You, receiving it, get to let that lead go for a moment. Surrender isn’t weakness here. It may be the hardest form of control there is: choosing to let go on purpose, while you know you can pick the reins back up at any moment.

The buildup does at least as much as the smack itself. Those few seconds before the hand falls, while you lie there and don’t know exactly when it comes, that is already where the tension starts to work. Spanking pain and pleasure run right into each other there, far more than most people expect beforehand.

How you grow into it together

Never start hard. Start with the flat hand, light, almost a caress, and just see what it does to you. Talk about it, before you begin and along the way: what feels good, where you want more, what is genuinely too much. That conversation isn’t unromantic. It is what makes the experience safe enough to give yourself over to it completely.

Build the intensity up slowly and alternate it with stroking over your back or your thighs, maybe a hand that wanders to a place that stirs more arousal. That alternation, hard and soft mixed together, is often where the most pleasure sits, not in the smack alone.

Agree on a safeword beforehand. It gives you both the freedom to play with full surrender, because you know you can always come back. Knowing exactly that is what makes it possible to let go completely.

What comes after the smacks

Aftercare is no side note. It is the closing piece. After a session your body and your head need time to land: an arm around you, a hand that strokes gently over your backside where it still glows, a few words that say it was good the way it was. That moment of aftercare often decides whether an experience stays with you as something beautiful, or leaves something raw hanging somewhere.

Why women explore this with me

As a gigolo in Amsterdam, a psychotherapist by background, I hear this story more often than you’d think. Women who are curious about spanking but have no partner to discover it with calmly. Or a partner who handles it a little too roughly or too clumsily.

I take my time with it. We start with a conversation, not a smack. What draws you in, what you’re unsure about, what you never want. From there we build up slowly, at your pace, with room to stop or change something at any moment. RACK isn’t theory from a booklet with me: we name the risks out loud, together, before we play.

Some women want to combine it with a broader scenario, role-play, power and surrender that goes further than the backside alone. Take a look at my bdsm-date, where we build a scenario together that fits you completely.

Curious what that would look like for you? Just send me a message on WhatsApp. No pressure, no obligations, I’ll message you back calmly and we’ll look together at what suits you. Or see right away how you can book me as your gigolo.
