Spooning

The cuddle position that is just as much a sex position, and why it feels so good with pain, pregnancy, or tiredness.

What is spooning?

Spooning is a position where both partners lie on their side, one with their belly against the other’s back. It is a cuddle position and a sex position at once. The name comes from two spoons that nest together in a drawer. Whoever lies in front is called the little spoon, whoever lies behind is the big spoon.

Where spooning comes from

The name is older than you would think. The etymological dictionary records “lie spoon-fashion” as early as 1814 and “lie close, as two stacked spoons” around 1870; the verb to spoon for making love and flirting dates to 1831. The image behind it is simple: two spoons lying inside each other, one person’s face against the other’s back.

Why people enjoy spooning

The appeal is in the back against the chest: lots of skin, little effort, and you do not have to look at each other. For anyone who is tired, pregnant, or hurting somewhere, it is one of the few positions in which no one has to carry their own weight. What rarely gets mentioned: the lower arm falls asleep, and without a pillow or a small shift it gets awkward after fifteen minutes. Lovely, then, but not a position to freeze in for a whole night.

What I notice in practice

I’m Victor, a gigolo. Spooning comes back with me more often as aftercare than as a sex position: lying like that for a while afterward, with nothing left to do. What strikes me is how quickly someone who holds themselves together goes soft in that position. Back against chest apparently says something a conversation does not.

Where this fits on this site

Is that mainly what you are looking for, lying close to someone with nothing you have to do? Then cuddle therapy probably fits it better than a sex booking. This page only explains the position; what such a booking involves you can read there, and you may always just ask your question first.

Frequently asked questions

What people still ask about spooning.

  1. What is spooning?

Spooning is a position where both partners lie on their side, one with their belly against the other’s back. It is a cuddle position and a sex position at once. The name refers to two spoons that nest together in a drawer.

  2. Why does spooning feel so good?

Spooning feels good because you have a lot of skin contact with little effort: no one carries their own weight and you do not have to look at each other. That makes it one of the few positions that stays comfortable even with pain, pregnancy, or tiredness. The only drawback is that the lower arm falls asleep after a while.
