Sex position

The posture people have sex in, and what that posture decides.

What is a sex position?

A sex position is the posture in which people have sex. The position decides the depth, the angle, how much eye contact there is, and who drives the movement. There are countless variants, but a handful are the most popular, mainly for comfort and intimacy. Switching positions during sex is completely normal.

The best-known families of positions

Although the number of variants is in principle endless, most fall under a few families. According to the encyclopedia, those are mainly: the missionary position, where the partners lie facing each other; from behind, in everyday speech doggystyle; the woman on top, who sets the pace and depth herself; and spooning, where both lie on their sides. Each family feels different, because, according to the same source, different positions give differences in the depth and the angle of penetration. Take the difference between the missionary position and the woman on top. In the first, control lies mostly with the partner on top, in the second the woman herself sets the pace and the depth. That same position also changes with a small adjustment, like the legs closer together or a pillow under the hips. So the posture is no side issue, it largely decides how sex feels.

Why varying is worth the effort

The position is no detail. According to the Belgian health portal Gezondheid.be, certain positions stay popular worldwide out of habit, but also out of ease, comfort, and the degree of intimacy they allow. Small adjustments often make a big difference: raising a leg higher, a pillow under the hips, changing the pace. For you, varying means discovering what suits you in depth, angle, and feel. For the two of you together it can break the routine and strengthen the bond. What it is not: there is no universal “best” position. Comfort and communication matter more than the perfect posture.

What you can do yourself

  • Dare to switch. Changing position during sex is normal and keeps it alive.
  • Steer with small adjustments. A pillow under the hips or your legs closer or farther apart changes the angle and the depth.
  • Say what feels good. Comfort and communication do more for the pleasure than reenacting a complicated position.

What a sex position is not

“There is one best position.” No. What feels good differs from person to person and moment to moment. Comfort and attunement weigh heavier than the posture itself.

“More complicated is better.” Not true. The most popular positions are actually simple, for comfort and intimacy. Acrobatics doesn’t add anything on its own.

What I see myself

I work as a gigolo for women, and I notice how much pressure people put on themselves to do “exciting” positions they know from porn. What strikes me is this: the position that feels best is almost never the most complicated, but the one in which someone feels safe and relaxed. I pay attention above all to comfort and to what lands, and adjust the angle and the pace to that. The rest follows on its own.

Where this fits on this site

I don’t sell acrobatics, but I do pay attention to comfort, angle, and pace, so a position feels instead of has to. Curious how a meeting without performance pressure goes? Then take a look at intimate togetherness. Talking first is always possible, and it commits you to nothing.
