Solo practice

Kink you do on your own, from self-bondage to orgasm control, with safety as the big thing to watch.

What is solo practice?

Solo practice is kink you do on your own, from self-bondage to orgasm control, without a partner there. You handle the whole experience yourself, from tying up to getting free. That is exactly what makes it riskier than play with someone else: there is no one who can save you if something goes wrong.

How solo practice works

Solo practice is BDSM with yourself as both parties. According to coach Brandon Stover it is about both physical and mental exploration: self-bondage, sensation play, impact, and orgasm control, but also fantasy, discipline, and building skills before you bring a partner in. The dynamic of control, surrender, and tension then plays out not between two people, but inside yourself. That is the appeal: you explore on your own terms, at your own pace.

Why safety counts double here

The flip side is that you are on your own. According to the encyclopedic description, self-bondage is considered riskier than a lot of other BDSM, and it has led to a number of recorded deaths, especially combined with breath control. The core problem: if something goes wrong, there is no one to save you, and if your circulation leaves a limb numb, your planned escape may no longer work. That is why solo practice asks for more preparation, not less, than play with someone else.

What you can do yourself

  • Keep scissors within reach at every tie, and set your phone out for when something goes wrong.
  • Never tie yourself in a way you cannot reliably escape, and keep at least one hand free during self-bondage.
  • Avoid breath control and substances. Breath restriction on its own, and judgment blurred by alcohol or drugs, are the fastest road to an accident.
