Pain slut

A name worn with pride within BDSM for someone who seeks out the heavy work, and why that desire has nothing to do with a disorder.

What is a pain slut?

Pain slut is a BDSM term for someone who, during a scene, wants to feel a lot of pain and gets arousal or release from it. It is a name worn with pride for a masochist who seeks out the heavy work, usually the receiving party, but not necessarily. In Dutch you sometimes hear pijnslet; the English term is used more often.

How pain can become pleasure

For a pain slut, pain in an aroused, safe situation tips over into something that feels good, while the same slap outside that context would simply hurt. The key is in arousal and surrender, not in the blow itself. Important to know: that desire is no abnormality. The World Health Organization dropped consensual sadomasochistic arousal as a separate diagnosis in the ICD-11. Geoffrey Reed and colleagues explain in World Psychiatry that it happened because people do this among themselves and with consent, and such behavior does not belong in a disease classification.

Why someone is a pain slut

The appeal is often in the intensity. Strong sensation switches off thinking and brings someone fully into the here and now, a kind of letting go that soft touch cannot manage. For one person it is the road to subspace, for another the arousal of daring to surrender completely to someone who takes the lead. What it is not: a free pass to just go hard. A pain slut still has a pain threshold, and seeking out that limit is something other than ignoring it.

What I see of it

In twenty-five years I have learned that the woman who laughingly calls herself a pain slut is almost always best served by calm beforehand and attention afterward. The tough label and the need for care go hand in hand. I never build up pain blindly. I read your reaction, check and wind down, and the aftercare is no side matter with me. With the heavy work in particular, that belongs to it.

Where this fits on this site

If you recognize yourself in this and want to explore the heavy work with someone who makes arrangements first, the BDSM date explains how a BDSM meeting is built up. Talking can always come first, and that commits you to nothing.

  2. Is being a pain slut a disorder?

No. Consensual masochistic arousal, the core of a pain slut, does not fall under a diagnosis in the World Health Organization’s ICD-11. It only becomes a complaint if someone seriously suffers from it themselves or if there is no consent. Enjoying pain within agreed limits is not that.
