Internal enslavement

When the slave role stops feeling like something you do and starts feeling like something you are.

What is internal enslavement?

Internal enslavement is a form of master-slave relationship where someone experiences the slave role not as play, but as a part of who they are on the inside. It turns on the inner, internalized sense of surrender, not on how far the agreements reach. The term comes from the BDSM community and is rarely used.

Dutch termInternal enslavement is used as-is in Dutch; there is no native translation for it.
Also known asinternal enslavement (abbreviated IE), sometimes “absolute enslavement”
Categoryan experience within an M/s relationship; falls under BDSM
Not to be confused withTPE: that is about how far the agreement reaches, internal enslavement about how the role feels on the inside
Applies topeople who feel like a slave as part of their identity, beyond a single scene
Main thing to watchthe deeper the experience sits, the more it matters that consent stays revocable

Where the term comes from

Internal enslavement is a neologism from the BDSM community for the far end of the M/s spectrum: the point where someone no longer plays at being a slave but is one. The practice isn’t new, only the label. The underlying practice has been studied, though. Dancer, Kleinplatz and Moser surveyed 146 people who call themselves slaves and try to live full-time in an owner-slave role. Relationships like that are rare, and most people with an interest in BDSM don’t take part in them.

Why people long for it

The pull sits in surrender that doesn’t stop at the door of the playroom. For someone who feels like a slave, internal enslavement brings the calm of something that feels like coming home: you no longer have to hold anything up. For the other person, the bond runs deeper than an evening of play. Still, there is one limit that weighs more heavily here than anywhere else. Sociological research by Ofer Parchev in Sexualities shows how the full-time master-slave form gets written off as risky. The more the role feels like an identity, the harder it becomes to see when you should stop, so it matters all the more that contact with the outside world and the option to step out stay in place.

What this comes down to with me

Internal enslavement is a way of life, not an evening you book, and that isn’t something a gigolo can deliver. If you are curious about surrender or dominance in a safe setting that stops again afterward, that is exactly what a BDSM date can be: intense, within your limits, and with all the room to stop at any moment.

Frequently asked questions

What people still ask about internal enslavement.

  1. What is internal enslavement?

Internal enslavement is a form of master-slave relationship where someone experiences the slave role not as play, but as a part of who they are on the inside. It is about the inner sense of surrender, not the reach of the agreements. The term comes from the BDSM community and is rarely used.

  2. What is the difference between internal enslavement and TPE?

TPE is about how far the agreement reaches; internal enslavement is about how the slave role is felt on the inside. Total power exchange turns on the scope of what gets handed over, internal enslavement on the sense that being a slave is part of your identity. Someone can have a TPE agreement without it sitting that deep inside.
