Ballgag

The most recognized piece of BDSM gear in the world, and the most underrated when it comes to risk.

What is a ballgag?

Ballgag (also spelled ball gag) is a gag made of a rubber or silicone ball with a strap that runs through the ball and buckles behind the head. It makes speech unintelligible and causes the wearer to drool. A common ball size is about 4.5 centimeters.

Also known asmouth gag, gag; related to the bitgag and the ringgag

How does a ballgag work?

A ballgag works by filling your mouth with a ball, strapped behind your head, so you can still make sound but not shape words. In your head it comes down to one thing: language drops away. And once the words are gone, the way you get something across moves to your body.

How do you use a ballgag safely?

Ballgag safety comes down to one rule above all: someone stays in the room the whole time. A gag is the single piece of gear where stepping out for a second is never an option. The same source is blunt about the risk. There is a high risk of suffocation if the wearer’s nose gets blocked, vomiting and choking make it worse because they close off the airway further, and with most gags breathing through the mouth is hard to impossible. The conclusion is stated without hedging: someone wearing a gag must never be left alone.

In practice: agree on a hand signal, because a safeword does not work, put something in your hand that you can drop, and take the gag out if you have a cold or a blocked nose. Pick a ringgag instead when speech isn’t the point, since the same source says that one lowers the choking risk. If I use a ballgag on a BDSM date, I stay with you and keep an eye on your breathing.

  • Bitgag. The gag with a bar behind the teeth that holds the mouth half open.
  • Bit. The mouthpiece itself, also used in ponyplay to steer.
  • Gag. The umbrella term for every gag, with the three main forms and the safety rules.
  • The mouth spreader is the opposite of the ballgag: it holds the mouth open instead of filling it.
  • Blindfold. The other sense people often take away at the same time as a ballgag.
