What is an alligator clamp?
An alligator clamp (also called an alligator clip or crocodile clip) is a spring clip with a toothed jaw that originally comes from electrical work. In BDSM it goes on nipples or skin folds. The teeth and the stiff spring make it one of the sharpest clamps there is. Used for longer than ten minutes at a stretch, it leaves bruises and lingering soreness.

How does an alligator clamp work?
The force comes from two things: the spring and the teeth. An alligator clamp has been described as a plier-like spring clip with a long, toothed jaw, meant to make temporary electrical contact. Those teeth don’t spread the pressure the way a smooth clamp does; they concentrate it on a few points.
What makes it hurt is known from the description of nipple clamps: the pinch, and above all the cutting off and letting back of the blood supply. That is why taking it off usually hurts more than putting it on.
What should you watch for with an alligator clamp?
The limit is time. According to that same description, bruises and lingering soreness show up with use longer than ten minutes at a stretch, and cutting off the blood supply for too long risks damage to tissue and nerves. That makes a clock more important than the intensity.
For the skin, toothed jaws are more aggressive than smooth ones. If this is new to you, you don’t start with this model. On a BDSM date, that is why I don’t reach for an alligator clamp first; I build up with something softer and keep an eye on the clock.
