Gigolo in Thuringia

In the middle of Germany, and hardly anyone comes here

Thuringia sits right in the middle of the country and gets skipped by travellers as a matter of course. That’s a shame for the state and handy for us: there’s little chance you run into someone here you know.

From Amsterdam, Erfurt is about five and a half hours by car. Too far for an evening, fine for a night or two days.

Erfurt and what lies next to it

Erfurt has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Germany, with the Krämerbrücke where houses stand on both sides of the bridge. It’s small enough to walk and big enough not to stand out.

Weimar is twenty minutes away and, for its size, carries an absurd cultural weight: Goethe, Schiller, the Bauhaus. Further south the Thuringian Forest begins, with the Rennsteig running straight through it. For a walk of a few hours it’s one of the finest places in the country.

Language

German or English, and Dutch if that’s easier for you. Outside Erfurt and Weimar, English is less of a given, but that makes no difference: I just speak German.

Practical

Five and a half hours’ drive to Erfurt. You hear the travel costs before a date is fixed, and they don’t change after that.

Nights, weekends and public holidays cost nothing extra, and as a pair you pay the same as on your own. For a stay of several days I ask for a deposit, because by then I’ve already booked a room or cottage.

Who I come here for

For women who are married and have missed for years what they never say out loud. Also for women starting over after a divorce and unsure how that works. For widows who feel guilty about wanting something again, which there’s no need for. And just as much for women who live in a small place where this isn’t talked about.

Discretion

In a state with a lot of small places I do this carefully. Parking where you want it, even if that’s at the edge of the village. No bouquet, no hearty booming at the front door. And if someone asks who I am, I stick to the story you came up with.

I do this on my own. There’s no agency between us, there’s no middleman, and your name ends up in no system at all.

What you can expect from me

On time, well turned out, and with nothing else in the calendar those days. I listen without steering you anywhere, and there’s very little I haven’t heard before.

Where you draw a line it stays, even if you want to move it yourself. I talk to no one about you.

Discretion in practice

On arrival I keep it low-key. No flowers, no greeting the street turns to look at, and the car goes wherever you want it.

For a stay in the Thuringian Forest a holiday rental is usually more discreet than a hotel: your own door, no front desk, and no one keeping track of what time you leave.

How a first meeting goes

First a few messages back and forth. I keep asking, you keep asking, and at some point you feel whether this suits you. A phone call works too.

On the day itself the beginning gets all the room it needs. For almost everyone that takes longer than they’d expected, and a two-day stay has all the room for it.

And after that it’s up to you whether there’s any further contact.
